Simon

Do you ever get that feeling when you lose someone you have loved for a long time, and immediately someone better appears in your life? Ever since Bram and I broke up, I’ve been crushed. Until one day. We are in class and it was announced that there was a foreign exchange student from Italy coming to our class. According to the teacher, his name is Elio Perlman. I saw him enter in the cafeteria. I could tell he was Elio, I haven’t seen him around and to be honest, I think I’m in love. I know people say that “love at first sight” isn’t true, but I don’t believe in what people say.

At lunch, I sit at my usual table. The same people that I care about sat there too. I’m staring at my lunch when my friend, Leah pokes me in the shoulder.

“Hey, Simon. You okay?” she asks.

I look up at her. “Yeah, why?”

“Because you are not even eating your food. Also, if you’re not going to eat that, I’ll eat it.” she replies.

“I’m fine and you can have it.” I say.

She stares at me for a long time.

“What?” I say.

“You are totally crushing on someone.” she says.

“What are you talking about?” I ask.

“You’re blushing, like you always do when you have a crush on a guy.” she says. Sometimes, Leah knows me so well, that it scares me.

“I have this new guy in my class and I kinda like him.” I say.

“Aw, that’s so cute!” My other friend, Abby says.

“Abby! Why are you always in our conversations?” Leah yells.

“Come on! I love stuff like this. I’m so glad that our Simon is moving on with his breakup with Bram.” she says, eyes twinkling. “So, what’s his name?”

“His name is-” I say before I get distracted. The source of the distraction is Elio, himself. He walks past me and I start to lose my mind. I stare at him a little longer than I feel like I should. It feels like everything came out of a movie. The guy that the girl likes(in this case the guy likes) comes out, walking in slow motion and the girl is practically drooling over the guy. And he has all of the qualities of a movie love interest. The dark curly hair and the nice smile. He even has the freaking blue eyes that anyone would die for.

“Simon. Are you there or are you in la la land?” Leah says, snapping her fingers. I jump a little from it.

“Why are you goo-goo eyed all of the sudden?” she asks.

“I think I found out why.” Abby says. She points to the direction Elio’s in.

“Oh my goodness. He looks so adorable!” Leah says. She looks at Abby and turns back at me. “Is that the one?”

“No it’s...someone else.” I mumble. Somehow, they hear me because they start shaking their heads at the same time.

“No it’s definitely him.” Leah says.

“And we literally just saw you stare at him the way Edward does to Bella in Twilight.” Abby adds.

“Ew! Okay Abby, Twilight is so old. Think of something else.” Leah says.

“I can’t. Edward stares at Bella a lot in that movie.” Abby says back.

“Anyways, Simon. If you want him, go get him.” Leah says, gesturing to Elio.
