In the blink of an eye, I was doing Sutton's five month picture on the floor of the tour bus while Hunter was doing his coffee house in Grand Rapids. We just came off a four day break after spending three days in New York doing press, a few talk shows and a concert night.
I took a few cute pictures of Sutton and turner her over onto her tummy while I sent Hunter, and both our families this months picture. I was sitting, watching Sutton as she lay on her tummy like the cutest beached whale when I heard a knock at the door. "Hey it's Sam."
"Its open," I said, still sitting on the floor across from the baby, he opened the door stepping onto the bus,"how are you?"
"I'm good, how are you guys?" he asked
"We are good, just doing the monthly picture. Everything good with you?" He nodded. I wasn't quite sure why he was here. He sat, watching Sutton try to wiggle on the blanket, somewhere between doing a plank and rolling over. "Did you need anything?" Sam shook his head and glanced at his phone. "I know I need to go get ready, Hunter said he would be coming back after the meet and greet.." My voice drifted off as Sam sat, scrolling trough his phone.
"Yeah, no he's coming in a minute." Baffled, I offered Sam a water.
"Mind watching her - I am going to get changed. Sam sat on the floor with Sutton while I fished through my bag for a pair of jeans. I forgot how cold it was up north in mid November. While I was changing, I heard the bus door open, it was Hunter.
"Jenna, we need you in five." he called. I heard him baby talking to Sutton afterward.
"Hey I'm ready," I emerged from the back of the bus wearing jeans, a black tee shirt and reached for my converse underneath the table. "How was the meet and greet."
"It was good, there are actually a few fans hanging back - they were hoping to meet you." His grin was mischievous but I nodded. We packed up Sutton and her things and headed into the back of the venue.
"So how did this come about?" I asked as we walked toward the green room. Hunter shrugged, saying it just sorta happened. He opened the door and to my surprise, my mom and dad were sitting on the couches! "Oh my goodness! What a surprise!" Both of my parents jumped up to hug me, "I'm so happy to see you! How did you.."
Before in could even finish, my dad interjected, "It was Hunter's idea."
I turned to him, and hugged him, laughing, "You didn't have a coffee house today, did you?" He shook his head laughing that he and Matt went to get my parents and Sam was in charge of making sure I stayed in the bus. I was overwhelmed but so happy my parents were here.
"Look at you Sutton," my dad cooed over the stroller, "my you have grown!" He scooped her out and took her to sit on the couch. "She has your eyes Hunter, and Jenna, this hair is all you." I laughed, nodding.
"How long are you guys here for?" I asked while getting my hair fixed up. My dad said that Hunter flew them in today and rented a car so they can drive with us to tomorrows show in Indianapolis. "That's amazing."
"We want to see you play, but we also want to get lots of baby cuddles," my mom said, holding her hands open to receive Sutton from my dad, "she is just the cutest. How is everything?"
"Really good," I told them about the yoga classes we had been going to, "it's also just a nice way to meet a few other moms." I kissed Sutton, wired up and made my way to side stage. Hunter showed my parents where to watch from, and the lights dimmed while the crowd began to cheer.
I made a point of pausing to let everyone know my parents came all the way from Toronto to be in Grand Rapids tonight and this was their first time seeing me perform with a band and a crowd. I played my set, introduced Lanco and headed off. My parents were smiling ear to ear, totally beaming the excitement.
"You did such a great job!"
"That was amazing!"
We headed back to tuck Sutton into bed and my parents offered to stay on the bus and watch her so I could go watch Hunter tonight.
I back in the venue and was sitting side stage as Lanco finished up. Hunter called my name and waved me over. "So aside from me wanting your parents to see you play, and see Sutton, I was hoping you sing with me tonight. What do you say?"
"That would be delightful." I smiled and Hunter told me he would stop after playing More and that would be my cue. And just as planned, Hunter finished More, taking a minute to talk to the audience about Sutton, and how I had the night off mom duty to come song a duet with him. The audience erupted at Hunter began strumming the chords to Everything Has Changed. I came on stage wth my guitar and joined in and began to sing, the audience put up their flashlights and swayed, singing the song right back to us. Matt filmed it all on his cell phone. Afterward, we picked up Better Than This, which got the crowd jumping and cheering. Hunter finished with an encore of I Want Crazy, confetti erupted from the ceiling above. I resumed my spot beside the stage and welcomed him in all his sweat and glory back to the green room to gather his things before we trekked to Indianapolis tomorrow morning.
