Virion rode next to Naur's horse as he escorted her through the forest. They had been riding at a smooth trot for nearly an hour now. The palace was far behind them. There were two guards in front of Naur and two behind. Five of the woodland realm's finest warriors. Virion knew he and his warriors would safely escort Thranduil's dear lady out of the kingdom.
Naur refused to let herself admire the forest, so instead she admired the elf who rode beside her. His eyes were the color of a tree's trunk, crisp and light brown. His cheek bones were painfully high and almost made him look skeletal. He would have appeared so if his hair was not such a vibrant gold. Unlike the snowy hair of her king, Virion's hair was the color of freshly struck gold or a field of golden wheat. It made him look more alive than some of the other elves.
What was odd was that he wore his hair in a single braid, instead of loose with two smaller braids.
"Tell me Guard Captain, why do you wear your hair like that?" Naur asked.
Virion's blonde eyebrows lifted a little in surprise. He had not been expecting the dark lady to talk to him let alone ask about his hair.
"My hair?" he asked.
"Yes, your hair it is a single braid. Why?"
Virion's pale complexion reddened a tad.
"Well, I know it is not the fashion or the custom or what not but, I find loose hair makes combat more difficult."
Naur laughed lightly at the answer.
"You are practical," Naur said with a white smile.
Virion smiled back, happy to have drawn a smile from the hooded lady.
"It is the truth! I cannot focus when each time I turn I am hit in the eye with my own hair."
"Ah, you see I have never had that problem," Naur said removing her hood and shaking out her long dark hair.
"You have fought yes?"
"Many times, but you see I needn't ever engage physically. I either burn them or summon flamelings to attack them."
"Flamelings you say?"
"Yes, the creatures I create from my flames," Naur said.
"I recall you summoning such creatures to play music whilst you first danced for the king," Virion said. "They can be used for combat?"
"Yes, I can make them into the form of any living being I please. But they are not truly alive, they are simple shadows. They have no heart or pulse, they do not breathe or think. They burn only as long as I need them for."
"Can you not keep them burning?"
"No, they burn out whether I will it or not."
Virion shook his head.
"Your magic is truly amazing."
Naur smiled gently.
"I thank you for saying so, many simply fear it."
"I do fear it," Virion said, his eyes hard. "But I do not fear you, Naur."
"Why is that?" she asked with a warm smile.
"Because you made the king smile."
"Is that such a rare sight?"
"Extremely," Virion said. "Like his father, King Thranduil is closed off. He must be regal at all times. And elven regality means walking above all others."
"Like a star in the night sky. Heavenly, brilliant, and far away," Naur said.
"Exactly," Virion said.
"I lived in Rivendell for ten years. I must say that Lord Elrond is much warmer," she said.
"I have always wanted to see Rivendell. I hear it is beautiful," Virion said.
"I am sure the stories you have heard do it no justice. Just as the stories I heard of this forest did it no justice. In regards to beauty I always find words to be lacking. Music and painting are the truest expression of emotions," Naur said.
Virion shook his head, letting out a breath.
"I see why the King enjoys your presence so much. You're both equally profound."
"Profound is another word for odd," Naur said with a laugh.
"I suppose you are correct in a way," Virion said.
The two laughed a little. Naur sighed as she breathed the sweet fall air. The wind tickled her face. Her peace was ruined by three rapid things: A guard ahead of her taking an arrow to the neck, said guard falling from his horse, and a warg pouncing on the riderless horse.
The servants of Sauron had found Naur.
