The Unspeakable
Growing up you are frequently asked a question
A deep question that was always far too personal but nobody saw it that way
People would ask me - What is your biggest fear?
I would smile and say spiders and they would laugh
I would lie.
Every time I would lie because the answer was always far too unspeakable
The answer was always far too above their head
Far too above my head.
The answer is something simple
Something easy
Something pleasant
Something horrific
Something so terrible it makes me physically sick when I think about it
Something that has stolen more lives than any disease
More lives than any monster or creature of the imagination
More lives than anyone in human history
My deepest fear has always been comfort.
The complacent comfort that people feel following anything good
It is the prime evil in the world
It drains the body of will
It creates laziness and excuses
It takes the adventurous soul and tames it
It sits at home
It is a creature of habit and repetition
It sucks life away without anyone realizing it
It lies on the lips of woman
In the hollows of a couch
In the folds of a blanket
In a mothers eyes
It is the prime evil
Something that has stolen more lives than any disease
More lives than any monster or creature of the imagination
More lives than anyone in human history
So I smile and say spiders and they laugh
I lie
The answer far too unspeakable
