Feels like December

10pm, some July night: heavy rain poured down as cars splashed water everywhere. Street lamps were lit up like flames in a dungeon. Buses and taxis rushed in their own directions, each driver and passenger with their own stories.

Soonyoung walked along the street, sheltered by an umbrella, and listening to music blasting through his headphones. Occasionally he wasn't looking up and bumped into people in huge trenchcoats and boots. Neon signs from restaurants flickered brightly from inside mall windows. How he wanted to be inside, not walking in the rain. He crashed into a slightly smaller figure wearing all black, who mumbled something incomprehensible and rushed off. Soonyoung paused for a minute and turned off his music for a moment. That person seemed familiar; that aura was almost home-like. He could've sworn that he had seen that same coat and hat somewhere. Other strangers poured around him as if they were water and he was an obstacle in their path, as he stared after the person. He didn't realise but his umbrella started to fall to his side as he stared, and his beanie started to get soaked. He eventually came to his senses and carried on walking.

Soonyoung made it back to his apartment about an hour later, at 11pm. It was still pouring heavily. He shook the droplets from his hair and bent down to greet his dog. Everything was as he left it, the usual. Absent mindedly, Soonyoung opened the fridge and grabbed a quick snack. He was about to head to bed, ready for a new day in half an hour, when he heard a knock at the door. It was uncommon to hear a knock at that time, and Soonyoung curiously padded to the door, crashing into furniture half-asleep. He got a surprise when he cracked open the door.

It was the same person who he stared after on the street. It was just that this time, Soonyoung could recognise them. It was Jihoon; his ex. He looked drenched and sorry for himself, so Soonyoung ushered him in and heated up hot chocolate with marshmallows -Jihoon's favourite- before sitting down at the coffee table on the floor with him.

"What brings you here at this hour? It's half an hour until midnight." Jihoon sipped his hot chocolate, slightly shivering in his thick clothing. The two of them had finished their relationship only three months ago. It was nothing dramatic, just that they wanted a break from each other. However, they hadn't really stayed in contact, and the atmostsphere at that moment was awkward. Soonyoung had already changed into pyjamas and his dog was sitting on his lap hoping for cuddles. Jihoon drank a bit more of the hot chocolate and eventually said something that surprised Soonyoung even more:

"I missed you."

Jihoon broke eye contact as soon as he admitted that, and looked out of the window. As for Soonyoung, he didn't know what to think. He gently asked,

"Why though?" Jihoon shrugged.

"Missed someone to hold. Someone to tease. Someone to love." At this point, it was two minutes to midnight. Even Soonyoung's dog was yawning, but settled down to sleep in his owner's lap. There had been no hard feelings, or tears shed after they had parted ways, but Soonyoung wasn't quite ready to get back with Jihoon. He needed a longer break. As if he read his mind, Jihoon quickly said,

"It's fine if you don't want me back. I understand. But I needed to get that off my chest." Soonyoung instinctively reached over and tightly hugged Jihoon, nostalgia hitting him. It was like old times. Their bodies still fit together like puzzle pieces. Soonyoung whispered in Jihoon's ear,

"I'm so sorry," and brushed his lips against Jihoon's cheek. He simply nodded, got up and opened the door. He sadly smiled and looked back at Soonyoung's living room, with him and his dog still on the floor.

"Let me know when you're ready. I'll be waiting." And with that he left. Soonyoung noticed that he had finished the hot chocolate. His dog started to snore. He sighed as he washed up the cup.

"I'm sorry."
