Year One:
Jihoon and Soonyoung were deskmates. They shyly greeted each other and looked away almost immediately. Then they got to making other friends. Jihoon noticed that Soonyoung made friends a lot easier than him; he was too shy to interrupt other's conversations to introduce himself. Soonyoung noticed and smiled gently at him, before asking if he wanted to be friends with his. The smaller nodded, avoiding eye contact.
Year Two:
The teachers had paired them up for an overseas school trip. They were to make sure that neither of them got lost at all times, and they would be bunkmates. Late at night, way after lights off, they would have talks about life in general, whilst everyone else slept soundly after their busy day. Neither of them had a watch, but some days, they would talk until the sun rose. Of course, they would both have sleepy looking eyes the next morning and be constantly yawning, but no one batted an eye. Actually, both stayed up pretty late on normal school nights, so baggy eyes on both of them weren't a big surprise. What they each stayed up for, no one knew.
Year Three:
Exam period. These were the major exams. The ones that seriously counted. Everyone ran around, stressed. The library was packed every single break and lunch, after and before school hours. At this point, Jihoon and Soonyoung still aren't particularly close, but they're good friends. Friends. Nothing more, yet.
One time after school in a secluded corner of the library, Soonyoung found Jihoon on a bean bag casually flicking through a manga. He asked him why he wasn't studying. Jihoon looked up and shrugged. He had studied enough, he thought, so there was not need to stress out more than necessary. Soonyoung nodded and walked away to study.
At around 6pm, Soonyoung stretched and gathered his books, heaving a sigh. How he would pass, he had no idea, but he could at least try. On his way out, he found Jihoon still reading the manga. So, he grabbed a book that looked good off one of the many shelves, and sat down next to Jihoon. Only then did he notice that the younger was starting to nod off to sleep. His hand was barely supporting the book. Eventually at some point whilst Soonyoung was reading, Jihoon subconsciously rested his head on Soonyoung's shoulder. Not taking his eyes off of the book, in response he laid his own head on Jihoon's. His hair smelt of strawberry ice cream and flowers. They stayed like this until sun set.
Year four:
"What do you want to be when you grow up, Jihoon?" He thought for a moment before answering,
"I'll take anything that pays good to be honest. But my dream is to be a song producer and writer. Maybe a singer, but that's unlikely. You?" Soonyoung tilted his head and puffed his cheeks.
"Awww don't say that Jihoonie. I think you'll make a great producer. As for me, I don't really know. I'm still figuring it out."
"You'd make a great nurse or something. I bet all the patients would love you." They both giggled and sighed.
"Remember during our childhood days when we could literally dream of whatever we wanted to be, be it a race car driver or even a pirate? Yeah remember when we didn't know what the real world was like?" Jihoon sadly pouted. "It's a shame we're not allowed to have that mindset anymore. Now it's considered childish. I suppose it is, but I want to believe that we can both earn a good living and maybe like I don't know, start a family or something. I want to have a normal life I guess, but some abnormality would be good as well." Soonyoung bobbed his head and adjusted his position.
"I could provide you with a lifetime of abnormality, believe me. My mum can confirm that." There was a comfortable silence, and Jihoon sensed Soonyoung closing his eyes slowly. He watched as his head ended up opposite his on the pillow. All he had to do was lean forward a bit in the bed to kiss his forehead.
"Good night, Soonyoung. I believe in us."
Year Five:
University life was hard to settle into, especially when your boyfriend and pretty much all of your close friends were at different ones. Jihoon let himself fall onto the bed. So many assignments, so little time. So many other things I could be doing.
Jihoon decided to call Soonyoung.
Calling: soOnYoUNg
"What's up?" He answered.
"Definitely not my will to live. Seriously I've got so many things to do and I don't know how I'm get it all done at their deadlines. How's things on your end?"
"Great I guess. Choosing to major in child health care wasn't actually a bad choice. I think. You better get to work."
"But I don't wannaaaaa"
"Fine okay do you want to go for ice cream later?"
"Meet you at your place. Love you."
"Love you too."
Call ended
Year Six:
The door flew open on a snowy winter's evening.
"Close the door Jihoon-ah!" Soonyoung was sitting on a couch wrapped in layers upon layers of blankets, with a mug of hot chocolate.
"Yours is on the counter." Jihoon trudged in and took off his boots.
"Why did I decide to take an admin job..." He muttered. He unwrapped some of Soonyoung's blankets and cuddled them around himself, with the hot chocolate in hand.
"Christmas is comin' up though...do you want anything this time?" Jihoon grasped Soonyoung's free hand.
"Not really. I want you but I already have that sooooo...maybe a puppy? Or a kitten?"
"No way. We don't have time to take care of one. Not whilst we have these jobs."
"Fair enough. Do you want anything?" Jihoon thought for a moment and shook his head.
"I'm perfectly happy with whatever I have at the moment...apart from my stupid job." Soonyoung laughed and almost spilt his hot chocolate, which made the both of them look like giant burritos on a couch swaying around randomly (they were laughing).
"I'm so glad I have you, Jihoon. And don't worry, you'll get that dream job of yours one day."
"Thanks Soonyoung. You mean the world to me."Year Seven:
Soonyoung lead Jihoon down the garden path whilst he was blindfolded, to the fountain. There was a bench on the fountain, and he pushed Jihoon to sit.
"What is this?"
"You'll see." And so, Soonyoung whipped off the blindfold to reveal a little wooden musical box next to the fountain. Jihoon carefully picked it up and slowly examined its every detail: the patterns on the roof of the small house in the middle, the boat orbiting around it, and the soft music playing from it. He must have spent at least 10 minutes just staring at it in awe, leaving Soonyoung in suspense. Eventually, still staring, he breathed,
"I love it." But he didn't notice Soonyoung get something from his back pocket. As soon as Jihoon managed to tear himself away from the music box, he found himself with a small black box on his lap. Soonyoung nudged him to open it. Inside was a silver and gold ring.
"Will you marry me?"In shock and overwhelmed, Jihoon looked at Soonyoung as if he didn't hear him properly. He was lost for words for once.
"Y-yes. Of course I would marry you Soonyoung." Relief spread over the older as he almost knocked the boxes out of Jihoon's lap. He pressed their lips together and they enjoyed the moment together. The musical box kept playing the melody, and all was well. If only it could last forever.
