Chapter 12

I did not see Gareth the next day at all. He was not at our table for breakfast, nor for lunch. I tried to find him at the gym, outside, the library, his cell...I even dared to venture a few steps into the men's bathroom. That is, until the stench of dried piss got to me. It was utterly disgusting.

When I would find that man, I would choke him.

I end up waiting outside his cell for him to come back for a whole hour, when an idea strikes me. Perhaps Burton had not agreed to the plea for arrowheads. Gareth had promised "Señor Jaime" he would get him arrowheads, but his only means had failed. So, he might be telling him this news.

I push myself off the wall I'm leaning on and walk as quickly as I can to Jaime's cell. Wherever it was. I try to navigate to where my cell might be from below. That's where I'll find him. His cell was above mine, after all. The male inmates stare as I push past them. I look like an idiot. Female inmates aren't supposed to be in the male cell block.

I spot a familiar short man with a head that could fit well in a sombrero. Sighing in relief, I stroll down towards his cell. He has to know where Gareth is.

And sure enough, there he is, in all his childish, annoying glory. He's on a rickety chair staring down at his knees. Señor Jaime looks at him in mild amusement. What could have happened?

"Gareth?" I ask.

He looks up. "Violet?" He replies questioningly.

"Señor Jaime." Señor Jaime utter proudly. He is ignored by both of us.

"You alright?" I question Montgomery.

"Fine and dandy, Ashford."

"I am doing well too, you know." Señor Jaime grumbles.

"What are you doing here anyways? I've been trying to find you." I tell Gareth. He doesn't say anything. "I even looked in the fucking men's room."

Señor Jaime laughs unhelpfully. "How'd you like the smell, young lady?"

"Please shut your trap, you crapmuffin." I say to him and turn to Gareth. "Well? Do tell. You were barely worth the piss."

"Okay, fine. Burton and I caught up for a long time. Just like old times. I asked him about the arrowheads once visiting hours were ending. He was surprised, and, well...."

"What?!"

He smiles and says to me, "He agreed, and he's sending them to me tomorrow. They're going to get here in a week. Violet, the plan's gonna work!"

I laugh joyfully and embrace him. Señor Jaime, unexpectedly, joins our hug and starts singing a mariachi song at the top of his lungs.

Our future was in motion.

FOR FUTURE CHAPTER REFERENCE: The rest of the book will be split in three parts. The first, which is from Violet's point of view, is now finished. The second will begin next chapter with a prologue and twelve chapters, much like the first part. You'll know whose point of view it is when you read it, but you can try to guess. The third part will be switched off from the points of views from the main characters in part 1 and part 2. It will start with a prologue, twelve chapters, and might end with an epilogue.

I hope you enjoyed this, and the rest to come. The second prologue will be up soon.
