I heard a knock on the door to my hospital bed. “Cassandra, there’s someone here to see you.” The nurse said.
I nod and she stepped out of the door way to let the man in.
The man was in his early thirties, coming in with a suit and a nice black jacket. Wait. I know this guy. His face caused me pain. This was the guy who investigated my father’s death. He put my mother through great pain.
“Hi Cassie,” he said with a smile and pulled up the chair next to me. “It’s been awhile.”
“Jerri.” I snapped.
“Now, if it’s okay, I have couple questions about your mother.”
“How the hell am I supposed to know anything? I’ve been stuck here for six months.”
“I know, but your friend came and visited you.”
My heart dropped. “How do you know that?”
“We always know.”
Jerri finally finished with his final question. I told him the honest truth.
“Okay Cassie, thank you.”
After he left, I felt disgusted with myself. I told him the truth to those same questions he asked twelve years ago. I sighed and another knock rang at the door. Josh stood in the door way with fresh clothes in his hands. He set them on the bed next to me and muttered, “Let me know when you’re done”.
I finished dressing and called Josh in. Dr. White helped me up and grabbed the crutches from the side of the table. I was not prepared for this.
“Who was the guy earlier?” Josh asked.
“Just some guy who came into my life when I was younger.”
“May I ask why?”
“When my father died, it was a guy named Jerri Morgan. He wanted to know everything about him and the family. Now today he came back to question me about my mother.” I paused as tears rolled down my face. “And it was the same questions he asked when my father died.” I continued to our room. “I’m scared, Josh. He isn’t a normal investigator.”
Josh opened the door for me when we reached our room. I sat down on my bed as Josh sat down to face me.
“Look,” he said. “Whatever that guy wants, don’t tell him the truth.”
“He knows everything. He knew about Junior coming and visiting me to tell me about my mother’s death. He knows about how my mom was the night before I left here. I just want this pain to stop.”
I felt more tears run down my face. Josh came over to give me a hug. He ran his hand through my hair. “It’s okay. I’m right here with you.”
The next morning went by quickly. I did my usual routine and talked with Dr. Glass.
“How is she?” He asked.
“She’s worried about the guy who investigated her about her mother.”
Dr. Glass sighed. “There’s nothing much we could do about that.”
“I’ve been trying to calm her down from the accident, but she’s changed.”
“I can tell that the kids and the accident have gotten her a bit shaken up.” Dr. Glass removed his glasses and looked to the door of his office. “Now, if you don’t mind, I have someone else I need to talk to.”
