I rummaged through the maps, trying to figure out what the hell to do. Because of those stupid kids, the whole plan is a bust. Cass maybe lying in that hospital bed for who knows how long. I threw down the pen that was in my hand. “Dammit.” I whispered to myself and ran my hands through my hair. “Pull yourself together, Josh.”

A knock rang at the door. “Come in.” I called.

The door opened and a guard came in. “Lunch is ready.”

I nod and wrap the maps up. “Okay. Thank you.”

The guard left. I still sat in the same place. This is pointless. I wrapped the maps up and put them in the ordinary hiding spot.

I headed out the door into the main hallway. I headed down to the dining hall.

As I stepped into the dining hall, Dr. Glass began his speech.

It was nearing midnight. Tonight, by far, is the hardest night to fall asleep. I’ve had sleeping problems since I was young. My insomnia is so bad that I need to take pills for it. I took my pills and fell asleep instantly.

A loud crashing noise filled my room.

“Damn it. Can you be any fucking louder?” A medium pitched voice asked.

“Well, sorry, Jason.” A girl’s snotty attitude responded.

They didn’t know I was awake I thought to myself. I didn’t move. Two big hands grabbed me and dragged me down to the floor. My head bounced back as I landed on my side.

“You’re going to end up just like her.” Becca taunted.

“We’ll beat you bloody.” Jonah added.

I picked myself up and punched Jason square in the face. He staggered backwards, holding on to his face. Becca grabbed the crowbar and caught it like a baseball bat.

Before she had time to swing, I ducked down as she hit air. I chuckled under my breath. Jason tackled me. I landed on my back and groaned in pain. Jonah held my wrists as Becca came over to take Jason’s place.

“Poor, poor Cassie,” Becca said. “She had no right to be hurt like that. But we’re doing a little, game, I guess you could say. We start with the last number of the Experiments.”

“Cassie wasn’t the last number. I’m the last number.”

“Well, we waited for the room to be empty. So, we decided to do it while you were on your routine.”

          “How do you –?”

Becca punched me hard on the face. I felt the cold metal of her rings cut open the skin. “We watched you.”

“You put her into a coma!”

“We could care less, 15! The deed is done. There’s no going back.”

Becca sighed and put her hand to my face. I slapped it away with my face. She punched me again. And again, and again. I felt warm tears swell in my eyes.

          “Aww, baby’s gonna cry.”

Becca looked at her hands. Her rings were covered in blood. My blood. I managed to push her over off my lap. Jason grabbed the crowbar and hit my face with it. He hit it straight in my eye. I bit my lip to keep me from crying out.
