I sat in my room, drawing as usual. Josh was sitting in the bed across the room from me. Today was another day for getting more drugs dosed into us. I could hear Glass from the room next to ours. I didn’t bother with the worry feeling.
“Whatchya drawing?” Josh’s calm voice asked.
“Nothing, really,” I responded. “Just something’s from back home.”
“That’s cool.”
I chuckled.
After almost an hour, Dr. Glass came into our room. “Alright love birds. You’re coming with us.”
The guards first grabbed Josh and then me. I was pushed out by a gun to my back. Josh went down a different hallway. Dr. Glass slammed a door shut and locked it. I was brought to an examining table and Dr. White was standing next to it.
“You should be happy, Project 14. Your punishment won’t be as bad as the others.”
“What do you mean?”
“They went through much, much pain. Yours won’t hurt as bad.”
“But why are you sparing me?”
Dr. White didn’t respond. I felt the examining table go down until I was lying completely down. Dr. White had a mask over his mouth.
My vision went blurry and dizzy. “Try not to move. It’ll only hurt more.” Was the last thing I heard before I went under.
Later that night, I was having difficulties sleeping. My arm was still in a lot of pain from earlier.
“Hey, Cass?” I heard Josh asks.
I just lay on my bed, thinking the thoughts that were running through my head. “Yes?”
“I’ve been thinking about something. I’ve been thinking of trying to escape.”
I push myself up and look at him. “Are you mad? There’s guards planted all over the place.”
“Not at night and when everybody is at lunch, all the guards are there.”
“Uh huh, okay.” I said, nodding. “Tell me wise guy. How are you thinking about pulling this stunt off?”
“Damn.” I heard him say. “I still need think it out.”
I scoffed and lay back down on to my bed. That boy must be mad I thought to myself. But with the thought of getting away, I remember Junior. If we manage to escape successfully, then I can see Junior again. I felt mix emotions fill up inside me.
But then again, this plan was crazy. There would be no way we’d survive out in this mad world by ourselves with no shelter. Especially we’d probably die if we don’t have food and water. Unless we find some way scrounge around for food and find nearby streams for water. He better think up a plan . . . A good plan.

I went to work on figuring out the plan. Cass was busy setting up for lunch. I managed to sneak out of our room last night to find the nearest exits. I redrew the layout and brought arrows to any possible exit. We would have to sneak out when everyone was at lunch or at night. Night would probably be best because of the cameras not being able to see much. I drew a circle around the nearest exit to our room.
We would have to go down the right hallway and then take another right, and then a left to get to the nearest exit. I drew more arrows to ensure the plan. A knock rang at the door. “Come in!” I called.
“Experiment 15, lunch is ready.” A guard said.
“I’ll be right out.”
He nodded and left. I rolled up the maps and put them under my bed.
I put down the blanket to hide the plans. I headed out into the hall and went to the dining hall.
“Experiments!” Dr. Glass called. We all focused our attention on him by now. “Our plans for this week have been postponed and will be re announced for next week.” Dr. Glass kept rambling on about random stuff by this point.
Cassandra looked so beaten and worn down. I sighed and grabbed her hand. She looked up at me and smiled. Dr. Glass sat down at the head of the table and began eating. Guards stood around him with guns-in-hand. I gave Glass my death stare. That ass deserves it.
I told Cassandra about the plan.
“I still believe you’re a mad man.” She said after a moment of silence.
“I’ve been planning this thing out since last night.”
“Still, it’s crazy.”
I sighed and brought out the maps from under the bed. Cassandra scoffed and came over to me.
“You stole the plans?”
“I didn’t quite “steal”. I pretty much “borrowed”.”
“It isn’t my fault if you get caught by Glass and his gang.”
“Please, that sixty year-old man can to crap to me.”
“He’ll take you to White.”
I scoffed at the comment. Cassandra looked over my shoulder as I rolled the maps on to the floor.
“There’s still going to be no way we’ll get out of here without the guards stopping us. Hell, for all we know, we could get out of here and they can find us. What do you think the first experiment was about? The chips, remember?”
“We could just take the chips out.”
“Tell me. How are we going to get the chips out if we could easily kill ourselves?”
“You live by forests. You know how to live in them.”
“Yeah, but I don’t actually live in them!” Cassandra yelled. “But hey, I give you props for doing the maps and everything.”
“Shut up.”
Cassandra scoffed and went over to her side of the room. I felt a cold breeze wash over me.
Looking back, I saw nothing. Cassandra kept reading her book. Doctor Sleep by Stephen King . . . The one and only. I kept drawing all over the maps. I circled where the cameras were. So, if we go during the middle of the night, the cops can’t find us. We have to make a plan. Make back up plans left and right.
It just doesn’t seem right, though. If we do manage to sneak out, and not get caught, something will seem wrong. They’d have a K-9 unit on our asses within seconds. The alarms will go off. What if they don’t go off? What’ll happen if we manage to get back to our colonies? Will our leaders send us back? Colony Fifteen is the strictest of all of the fifteen colonies.
I drew where the guard is for watching the security cameras and where the alarm goes off. A knock rang at the door. The guard came in. “Experiment 14, you have a visitor.”
