Over the next month, Cassie was finally getting better. She was still a little bit weak, but thankfully she kept hanging on. I finished packing my bags and threw them on the floor next to me. Cassie came over to me.
“Well, I guess this is where our endings come.” She said with a chuckle.
I sighed. “Am I ever going to see you again?” I said, instantly looking away from her.
Cassie shrugged, “As long as you could get across the border. Past that, I believe we can.”
“What about Junior? How would he react?”
I felt Cassie take my hand. She pulled me up and kissed my lips. “As long as we don’t do that around him, then I’m sure he’ll be fine.” Cassie smiled.
Tears began to fall down her face. I pulled her close and she rested her head on my shoulder. She began crying heavier. “I hated this place.” She whispered. “But I’m going to miss you.”
I ran my hand up and down her back. A knock interrupted us. I pulled away and saw Dr. Glass looking at Cassie.
“Cassie, your driver is here.” She looked at me and then back at me. I watched her nod towards Dr. Glass.
“Can you give us one last minute?” She asked and Dr. Glass left.
Her face was turning red along with her bright blue eyes. I walked up to her and wiped her tears away. Cassie pulled me close. I gave her one last kiss. We kept it there for about a minute. She was the first pull away. I nod and gave her a hug.
“Don’t forget me Cassie.”
“I promise.” I pulled away. Cassie let out a weak smile and left.
Junior came out of the van when I walked outside. A Convoy police officer was going to be driving us. I walked up to Junior and he gave me a hug.
I let out a shaky sigh and got into the van. Junior must’ve known my nervousness.
“Are you okay?”
“Y – Yeah, I’m fine.”
Junior looked at me. “Please, I know you’re lying.”
“Okay. I don’t want to go home. It sounds like it’s a warzone.”
I watched him shake his head. “No. No, it’s really not. Loretta is trying to keep everyone calm.”
“What happened?”
Junior began his story. “It all started after you left. More and more people began to get drunk. The bar couldn’t even hold anyone anymore. That’s how your mother died. She became so drunk that she died of alcohol poisoning. I’ve seen her around and she looked worse than you. It was horrible. Even a few times I’ve seen the police at your house.”
He continued. I sat in silence. The next thing I remembered was a van, bigger than ours, colliding into my side of our van. We began rolling and I felt Junior’s hand clasp on to mine and we rolled a few more times. On the last roll, my face smashed into the window and I felt my nose crack.
I cried in pain. Junior was slouched in his corner and he was knocked unconscious. His hand was still entwined with mine. I groaned as the seat belt dug into my chest. Glass was scattered and I was covered in many cuts and gashes. Blood was pouring out of my nose. And at that same moment, the van rolled onto its back.
