Rolling into school after taking a catalogue's worth of pictures was overwhelming, knowing that it was going to be our last high school dance.
"Everything alright?" Jack asks, linking our hands and standing at my side.
I take a shaky breath. "Yeah, it's just hitting me that we don't have long left here."
He takes my other hand and manoeuvres me to look at him. "Hey, don't talk like that. Let's just enjoy tonight."
I smile and let him lead me to the gym. It looks incredible, as always. Prom committee came through.
"I think it's time for our favourite school dance tradition," I say to Jack, biting my lip in excitement.
"You gonna run already, Fox? We've literally only been here for 20 seconds."
I turn to Jesse with a stern glare. "Shut up, Dexter. I mean," I turn back to Jack. "Let's go get our picture taken."
His eyes go wide. "You mean Shane?" He gulps.
I nod vigorously, heading off to find the very man.
"KT! Hey, girl! Where've you been? Getting ready? Because I know it takes time to look that good. Get in front of my camera, baby!" Get yourself a hypeman like Shane.
I pull Jack towards me for some posing. "Oh, Jack. You can do no wrong, baby! Ah! I'm so glad I broke up with my ex because now I get to appreciate your fine ass guilt-free! Give it to me, sweetie! Yes, bitch!"
"I hate every second of this," Jack says through a smile.
"Come on, sweetie," I tease. "This is the last time we'll ever have to do this."
He gives me a sad smile. "Okay, Juliet." He kisses me lightly.
"My goddamn heart! Kill me, I'd say thank you. Love you, queens." Shane then runs off with his camera before I can even thank him.
Jack wraps me in his arms. "You wanna go see where everyone else is?"
I shake my head, wanting to be just us for longer. "Let's dance."
"You having fun?" Jack asks.
"Yeah, I am." We sway gently to the slow song.
Jack pushes a strand of my hair behind my ear. "You think we'll get prom royalty?"
"You will, but I'm rooting for Scarlett for queen. We haven't had a black prom queen since we've been here. It's time for a change. Plus, I was her campaign manager so if she doesn't win then that's a loss for me."
Jack nods over to the drinks table where our friends are loitering. Jesse's spiking the punch. "You wanna see what they're all doing before Scarlett is whisked away?"
"Hold up. Don't tell me you're trying to run away from me!" I place my hands on his and squeeze lightly, my unspoken way of keeping him from leaving. "You have to dance with your super hot girlfriends during slow songs. It's the law."
He laughs with a small smile. "Sure thing, Kat."
The slow song comes to an end and I grant Jack his mercy by leading us off the dance floor. On our way, we pass Roxy and Damon.
"You coming to dance?" Roxy shouts over the loud EDM track.
"Yeah!" Jack says excitedly.
"Give us two minutes, we're getting punch. But we'll meet you out there," I tell them, grasping Jack's hand.
"You good, sis?" Damon asks, looking at me strangely.
"Why wouldn't I be?" I smile and walk towards the punch bowl.
