35: "You Can't Ask Me That."

The theme for prom is 'Hollywood Romance'. You know what that means; red carpets, big dresses, flashing lights, the works.

Scarlett chose and she's been excited about this for months and I'm excited to hear the end of it. Personally, I always prefer the day before prom.

Don't ask me why, but my school lets all the seniors skip school on the Friday before prom. So that's why I'm at Jack's house, while both his parents are at work.

We spent more time trying to pick a movie to watch on Netflix than we actually spent watching 'The Terminator' so we decided to forgo a movie and put Jack's Spotify on.

"I think last weekend went amazingly," Jack says while I trace my fingers across Jack's chest as we lie on the couch.

"Yeah," I laugh. "I have never seen Damon so worked up about something."

"Neither have I. I'm not sure whether to be proud or offended that he believed it. Like I'm either really good at acting or he actually thought I would do something like that to you." He looks at me with a soft expression.

I kiss him swiftly before replying. "You're good at acting. I wouldn't let anybody break up with me over something stupid like that."

"Of course you wouldn't." He's silent for a moment before speaking again. "I don't think Roxy's forgiven me yet. I have no idea what will happen tomorrow."

"I almost don't want to go," I say, referring to prom.

"Why not, I thought girls are excited for senior prom since kindergarten?" Jack asks, fiddling with my hair.

"But I prefer spending time with just you, like this."

"I think everyone else would miss you if you spent all your time with me," he laughs.

I sit up straight, drawing Jack's attention. "That reminds me. Roxy and Scarlett kind of said stuff like I was spending too much time with you and I'm forgetting about them. Because I don't think I'm doing that. Obviously I'm going to be spending lots of time you: you're my boyfriend for fuck's sake."

"Woah, woah, woah," Jack stops my word vomit. "Kat, if you're not worried about it then don't listen to them."

"Yeah, you're right." I take a breath, closing my eyes. "I'm just gonna ignore it."

Jack's quiet for a few moments before he speaks again. "I can see where they're coming from, though."

My eyes shoot open at his statement. "What's that supposed to mean?" I ask accusingly.

"It's just that we've been spending a lot more time together recently, so I understand their point. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing and I'm not saying that they're right, I'm just saying that I get it," he defends, raising his hands slightly.

"Yeah, I mean of course I get their point. But surely it's normal to spend more time with your significant other as you get closer and the relationship is more secure."

He sighs. "But it's not just that is it?" His voice is quiet, almost as if he's not sure he wants me to hear it.

"What are you talking about?" I match his volume.

He rests his hand on my thigh, moving his hands in circles as he speaks. "Ever since you told me about what happened with your ex, everything has sort of changed."

I remain silent, unsure of what to say. Is everything going wrong because I got assaulted? Is this a joke?

Jack takes my silence as an invitation to keep talking. "I'm not saying it's anything to do with that, just that since then you've been coming to me about it to offload. Which I am obviously happy to do. I love being there for you. But you've kinda been coming to me with everything because I'm the only one you can talk about everything with. Even things you used to always go to them about. Which, again, I'm fine with.  But if I was taking their side, this is what I'd point out."
