A Cognate Thing-a sophitz story

Fitz was struggling trying to figure out if it was too soon or if he was rushing too fast. They were boyfriend and girlfriend now, and he wanted to kiss her goodnight but he also didn't want to scare Sophie or ruin things. He wanted her to trust him, trust was the most important thing.

As they reached the front steps Fitz decided he would wait, but if Sophie gave him any indication or sign that she was ready for him to kiss her he would. Sophie stepped up one of the steps before turning to face Fitz. Standing up on the step she was still shorter than him but they were a lot closer to being eye to eye and he could see the thoughts churning in her head as her eyes scanned his face. He grabbed her other hand, his fingertips pulling his into hers until they were locked intertwining.

"What are you going to tell your family about today when you get home?" She asked quietly.

"I'll tell them that we went for a walk and talked about things and then went to Mysterium for dinner." He answered, it was all the truth and sounded very boring, which was sure to drive Biana nuts.

"And if they ask what we talked about?" Sophie inquired, wondering what exactly she herself would tell Grady and Edaline.

"Well I could tell them we decided to keep trying to mind loop, that would make Biana frustrated that I wasn't telling her more information." Fitz paused his look changing across his face. "Or I could tell them that you are my girlfriend."

The grin on Fitz's face was so big while he was thinking about telling them that he was dating Sophie. It made her think of how in movies she watched growing up little kids were so excited for Christmas or birthday presents and they were overly animated and all their emotions seemed exaggerated.

"I think you should tell them I'm your girlfriend, it would be easier to let you face the inquisition from Biana than have to deal with her myself." Sophie said with a laugh.

"And when she asks if I kissed you?" Fitz inquired softly, Sophie could hear the mixture of nerves and suspense in his voice but also hope. She looked into his sparkling teal eyes and at that moment knew, she wanted Fitz to kiss her. Her heart fluttered with this realization.

"Well I guess you could tell her that I kissed you." And with that Sophie leaned closer to Fitz and closed her eyes, instincts taking over as she could feel the warmth of his breath on her cheeks.

She had zapped herself many times in Elementism trying to bottle electricity over the years but it was nothing compared to the energy that was pulsing through her body starting at her lips the second that Fitz's connected with hers. When everything had felt so wrong kissing Dex before, just like the star bottling with Fitz it just felt right. His lips were soft yet firm and felt like they were two puzzle pieces that had lined up perfectly with hers. She leaned deeper into Fitz not wanting to be any further than she had to. She soaked it all in knowing this was the perfect moment she would replay this memory for the next ten weeks while he was in the towers when she missed him. After what felt like hours and also only a few seconds at the same time the energy dissipated as they pulled away from one another and Fitz rested his forehead on hers.

"Wow," he said breathlessly. Sure it had only been a small, sweet kiss but something inside of Fitz knew he wanted more kisses from Sophie, lots more kisses.Why was the next break so far away?

"Yeah," Sophie agreed nodding trying to focus her thoughts. "Are you going to be able to leap home safely or should I grab a nexus for you?" A hint of a giggle was in her voice.

"I'll be fine, I just need a couple seconds."

After collecting his thoughts, Fitz let go of Sophie's hands and gave her a hug, a new confidence in hugging her and having her close to him. He paused and leaned over and gave Sophie another kiss on the cheek and whispered in her ear. "Goodnight my girlfriend, I will see you tomorrow before school."

"Goodnight Fitz." Sophie answered back still grinning, replaying the moment their lips met over and over in her head before turning to go inside.

In a flash his home crystal caught the light and he was gone.
