The grocery store that Harley planned on us to raid sat inside a chain of other stores. A GNC which was a type of store that carried vitamins and weight loss supplements sat beside it. Before the apocalypse it would be filled with overweight people who wanted to lose weight easily, they would spend a million dollars on stuff they "needed" and not lose a pound.
"Let's go there after," Tucker nodded at the GNC, "we could use some vitamins, god knows we arnt getting everything we need from canned food."
"Okay this is what's happening," Harley started formulating a plan, "John and I will go in since we're the only ones who have guns, we'll clear it out quickly and call you guys in to help us scavenge, after that we'll do the same thing to the GNC. Got it?"
Everyone nodded in agreement. A look passed between John and Harley as a kind of "ready?" thing and then they stepped out of the car.
They disappeared into the store and everyone held their breath, already anticipating them stepping back out.
We heard gunshots, six to be precise, and then a minute later they popped out of the door, waving us in.
All four of us jumped out of the car and jogged to the front. The store was a mess but none of us expected any better.
"Split up into groups of two, just in case," Harley called out, Deb in tow.
John and Olivia walked off into the opposite direction and left Tucker and I alone.
"Want to head over to the knife section?" Tucker asked. I nodded, walking around without a weapon was just about the dumbest thing you could do.
Tucker headed the way we thought the knives were and I followed him, the back of an aisle was where we found what we were looking for. Hunting knives.
Tucker threw me a clip that I put on my belt, and then a knife that slid into the pouch. He clipped one on his and slid a knife into his holder too. "All set, guess we should go and get supplied for the group, what do we need?"
"Toilet paper!" I called out.
Tucker laughed at my outburst and I laughed at his laugh, "you're so cute," he said.
Immediately my laughter died down and my stomach twisted into nervous knots as he started walking towards me.
He kissed my slowly at first, it seemed like even he was not quite sure of what he was doing. I wrapped my arms around neck and crushed his face to mine. His kiss changed and he seemed urgent, grabbing my ass and picking me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist.
"HELP ME."
We both snapped out of the moment. He dropped me to the ground and I fell on my ass painfully. We paused and finally I jumped up and we both sprinted towards the scream.
We saw Harley and Deb and ran towards them. John and Olivia emerged from an aisle, Olivia covered in black blood.
"What happened?" I yelled giving everyone a once over. No one seemed injured just a little shaken up.
"A zombie jumped out at me, it's fine. I'm fine." Olivia answered.
"You didn't get bitten?" Harley asked.
"No, I said I'm fine," Olivia snapped.
"Everyone as a group now, let's go," Harley said. All of them had bags slung over their shoulders filled with food.
"Why don't y'all have anything?" Harley asked me and and Tucker.
"Uhm, uhmm," I could feel my face getting red.
"We couldn't find bags," Tucker broke in, saving me from an embarrassing confession.
"Well here," Deb tossed us two backpacks that she had produced from her bag.
"Everyone doubtfully stared at us but didn't question us.
"Let's go get cleaned up first." We headed towards the clothes section.
Debs bag was filled with toothbrushes and toothpaste and hairbrushes and deodorant and everything else that we would need.
Everyone grabbed a pair of clothes including me, finally abandoning the black jacket.
I slipped on a pair of grey sweat pants and a green shirt. I gazed at Tucker as he changed his clothes as I brushed my hair and even got a chance to brush my teeth with water from a bottle John had. I swiped on deodorant, noting that I needed to shave, and sprayed on some perfume.
This was about as clean as I was gonna get until I could find a lake or river that I could wash up in.
We went through every aisle, filling out bags with some medical supplies as well that included bandages, Neosporin and some antibiotics.
"Let's find a place to sleep after we load up the car," Olivia whined, "I'm tired from all this work."
"Fine," Harley huffed, loading up the last bag to the trunk. We loaded into the car again the same way we did before.
Tucker and I sat by each other but I made sure we sat as far away as we could. We couldn't have another moment like we did in the store, I just couldn't have feelings for someone in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
Tucker grabbed my hand attempting to me sweet and hold it but I snatched it away. He gave me a weird look but I knew he wouldn't say anything in front of everyone else in the car.
I leaned my head against the window and gazed at everything. "Hey you guys that looks good." I pointed to an old farm house. It was big and roomy and hopefully not full of too much carnage.
"It'll do," Olivia said pursing her lips. That girl sure was sassy.
Harley pulled the car into the drive way and shouted at me and Tucker, "can y'all get some food from the back, me and John will clear it out." We nodded and popped open the truck.
Tucker studied me as I reached into the bags and pulled out a couple of cans of corn and green beans. I gave them to Tucker and picked up some water bottles.
"What's wrong with you?" Tucker asked.
I rolled my eyes, "nothing," I barked.
He put up his hands in a surrender pose and backed up. "Fine, guess ill just leave you alone then," he nastily said. Obviously I had made him mad.
I walked inside the house where everyone already sat waiting for me to bring the water.
They gave me an already open can of green beans and a fork and passed out the water I had been holding.
We are in silence, there was really nothing much to say. Every few minutes Tucker gave me a sideways glance and then would shake his head.
Harley coughed to get our attention, "Tucker, Ellie, I don't think this is working. I think y'all need to go y'all's own way."
