ELLIES POV

Tucker and I had been to hell in back, but it was worth it if we could get the cure out of it. We didn't know Harley's exact address or if the cure was even there like he claimed, or if it had been, if some scavengers took it wondering what it was, but it was worth the chance.

We had been driving nonstop these last two days, eager to get to the cure. And because of that we only had around an hour until we got there.

"I know it's a long shot, but if the safe zone is there, we should get their help in searching for the cure." Tucker suggested. He was still set on that safe zone and he had actually gotten me pretty excited for it.

"I agree," I said smiling at him. He looked at me surprised, it was the first time I had acknowledged that there could be a safe zone at all.

We hadn't kissed since the store and hadn't even talked about it since then but every time I looked at him I had the urge to pounce on him. But that came with emotions and that was just something I couldn't do.

"We need to stop soon, for gas," Tucker spoke up, "we're almost on empty and I really don't feel like being stranded somewhere."

A parking lot filled with cars was in sight a second later and I pointed it out. "Good enough," I shrugged.

He whipped the car into a parking spot and threw me a gas can and pointed to the nearest car. "We'll start with that one," he said pulling out clear plastic tubing.

"You're doing it, right?" I said flashing my most adorable smile. Last time I did I had that horrible taste in my mouth for like a week.

"Sure," he replied rolling his eyes and unscrewing the gas can lid and then opening up the gas tank on the car. Even through his eye roll I didn't miss the hint of a smile he had.

I turned around acting as a lookout and laughed as I heard him start coughing from all the fumes in his mouth. Nobody liked having to start the flow of gas by sucking on the tube but somebody always got stuck with it.

"This car is already empty," he said lifting up the red gas can and shaking it. A minuscule amount sloshed around at the bottom of it, that car must've been running on empty. "I'll go to the next one, just continue being a lookout."

I nodded in response and turned my back on him. I saw something move in the distant, just a flash, and then it was gone. Maybe I was seeing things from lack of sleep or something cause a zombie could never move that fast. Unless.... Holy shit I really hoped that these zombies weren't evolving or some crap like that.

I saw it again and this time it was unmistakable. It ran behind a car on the other side of the parking lot. "Tucker," I whisper shouted, "there is something over there."

"What?!" He yelled obviously not hearing me. Idiot.

I pointed in the direction of whatever I saw and then turned around to face Tucker. I think he finally got my drift because he wrapped things up pretty quickly and started filling our car up.

Suddenly it was running at us and I cowered behind Tucker and closed my eyes.

"That's what you were afraid of, hahaha oh my god Ellie it's okay, open your eyes," Tucker sounded amused.

I opened my eyes and... A dog?! I rushed at it and it stood there happily letting me pet it. "Can we keep it?!!" I squealed at Tucker like a 5 year old girl.

"Sure," he still had that amused look on his face and I realized I must've looked like an idiot. I stood up and composed my self and then picked up the dog and got in the car.

The dog was actually still a puppy, I guess animals were doing fine in this world? So fine they were still having babies.

It was clearly a mutt, and one of it's ears was caked with blood. It's tongue was hanging out of the side of it's mouth and I realized that it must've been hungry and thirsty.

Tucker climbed into the car as I climbed into the back and got out a can of beans and a water bottle. The little pup devoured the beans and lapped up the water happily.

"He likes you, what's his name?" Tucker asked.

"Hmmm, idk what do you think?" I asked, scratching the pup behind it's ears.

"It looks like a Leo to me."

"I agree, my little Leo," I lifted up the pup and rubbed my nose against his. Leo yawned and I cooed at his cuteness. He then circled around my lap and plopped down on it, closing his eyes. I guess he was tired.

"How long until we get to Wimberly," I asked.

"We should be there in 5...." His reply stopped as he stared up at the huge fence that had been previously hidden behind a hill.

I gaped up at it "I guess we found it."
