I woke up to a light tap on my shoulder. Groaning I turned around and came face to face with a young man, maybe 18 or so. "Come on, let's go," he said pulling me to a sitting position. I flinched at the pain that came from my leg. He looked down at my it and stared wide eyed at my calf. "1-10, how much does it hurt?" I managed to get out, "10."

Nodding he picked me up and threw me over his shoulder and walked out of the tent. My leg hurt with very bounce of his step and he had to hush me several times as we made our way out of the church door.

"Where's your car?" "Five buildings down, it's a truck." I mumbled. He looked both ways then ran in the direction of the truck. He tossed me into the passenger seat and the pain radiated throughout my entire body. The keys were still in the ignition and he wasted no time starting the car and driving away from the church. The headlights in the darkness illuminated the church and I cursed at the wretched place.

Blinking out sleep I glanced over at the man who had saved me. He had scruffy facial hair and his clothes were in tatters. "Who are you?" I croaked. I grabbed for the gun that I kept in my waistband and didn't feel anything. They must've taken it from me.

"My names tucker." He waited for me to introduce myself and I finally did. "Ellie."

"What did they want back there?" I asked finally feeling at ease with this strange guy.

He chuckled, "they had this crazy idea of...repopulating. They had cleared that town and found the church with a back up generator, and they were planning on building a barrier."

I gagged at the thought of them repopulating. It was a crazy idea and one sure to fail. "Were you with them?" "I was for a little while, but they weren't sane. I was planning on leaving tonight anyway, but I had to save the damsel in distress first."

"I am not a damsel in distress," I yelled punching him in the arm," I'm perfectly capable. I could've gotten away on my own."

He glanced at my leg, it was swollen and red and looked all around horrible. "You can't even walk."

I crossed my arms and muttered a whatever.

"We need to get that patched up actually, do you have any medical supplies?"

"No, I don't usually get hurt."

"We'll stop in the morning then, let's just sleep in the truck for tonight."

I nodded in agreement and he pulled over on the side of the road. I crawled in the back and watched him drape his body across the front seat and shut his eyes. I did the same.

"Dad, what's going on?"

"Ellie I don't have time to explain, just pack a bag and get in the car." He ran to the pantry and threw all of the cans into a bag then ran to the refrigerator and filled the rest of the bag with water bottles.

I watched with tears in my eyes, so afraid. "GO ELLIE," he yelled.

Finally I ran up the stairs and entered my room. I grabbed a backpack from under my bed and filled it with clothes, I made sure to grab a couple of family photos. I heard my dad yelling downstairs and ran down and into the car. My brother already sat there. "I'm scared Jacob," I said. He hugged me and whispered, "me too."

My mom and dad ran out and jumped into our minivan. "We have to go get the Anderson's," my mom yelled. "No Sarah, we don't have time." My mom gave my dad a hard look and jumped out of the car, sprinting to our neighbors front door.

"Wait in here kids," my dad said then jumped out of the car and followed my mom.

A minute later they came back outside, each helping the Anderson's. They were around 80 years old and could barely walk. Me and my brother climbed into the last row of seat and mr and ms Anderson filled the seats we had just been sitting in.

"What's going on David?" Mr.anderson asked my dad.

"I don't really know to be honest, all I know is that the government is setting up safe zones from some kind of disease, that's where we're going now."

"Wake up, it's morning," tucker shook me awake for the second time in less than 24 hours. "Let me sleep," I groaned rolling over to my other side. "I made breakfast."

I opened one eye, and then the other slowly. "What'd you make?" "I heated up a can of beans." Now that he mentioned it I was smelling something delicious. He handed me a bowl and a spoon, "eat up."

While I ate he wrapped my leg and gave me a water bottle and Advil. "Where'd you get this stuff?"

"I went on a run while you were a sleep."

"I need to go find a gun, those guys must've took mine."

He chuckled and pulled out my gun from under the drivers seat, "I grabbed your gun and a gun for me when I left."

"And why didn't you give it to me?"

"I didn't know what kind of person you were."

I scoffed, "I'm the one that got caught and almost raped by your group."

"Yeah and I'm the one who saved you," he shot back.

"Touché," I replied, "but never take my gun away from me again."

"Agreed."

I finished eating and threw the bowl on the side of the road, but slipped the spoon in my bag. Bowls weren't a real need. You could find them in any house and if you didn't have them then you could eat your food straight from the can. But I didn't want to have to eat with my hands.

"Where are you heading?" I asked him.

"I heard something from a guy I met on the road about a safe zone, somewhere in Texas."

I shook my heads, "I went to a safe zone when all this started, it got overrun in days."

"Don't you think it at least a try?"

"I'm not really big on false hope."

He shook his head, "well I'm going wether you come with me or not."

"Fine, we'll go and find you a car and I'll help you scavenge and then we part ways."

"Deal."

Even though I had known Tucker less than a day, the thought of separating from him still shot a pang through my heart. No one ever gets use to being alone, but I wasn't going to try for another safe zone, not after what happened the first time.
