A pool of beige. Swirls of milky white radiating outwards from the center, warping and blending together. I grip the object firmly and continue the rotating motion to mix the colors together.
Then I take a sip of my coffee from the mug.
As an educator, caffeine is vital to keep energy in me. No one really considers how tiring being a teacher can get. Standing up almost all day, talking in front of a class, and I won't even get into how much information I need to keep stored in my brain. For example, I teach math for grade seven students. I teach math because I had to learn all of that math, and just like the students, I need to remember that knowledge and apply it to situations. For me, it's teaching, for the kids, it's tests.
I might seem like I'm complaining a lot, but I really do love this job.
To the students and staff of the school, I'm Mr. Baldimore, or Mr. Baldi, or simply Baldi. Teaching is the one thing I've got going for me. I must admit though, I'm extremely lucky to have such an astoundingly lively group of obedient students who look up to me. I'm filled with delight every time I walk into the classroom and see their bright faces eager and ready to learn.
This career would be so much harder if the students didn't make it so easy for me. And I tell them that almost every day. In response, they say that they wouldn't be so easy if I wasn't such a great teacher. It's pretty much a case of which out of the chicken or the egg came first.
Now, I don't mean to boast, but I must admit that I'm proud of my work as a teacher. I've learned that there are a few things that you need to know when dealing with kids. Well, at least the ones in my grade seven class. You need to be kind, patient, relaxed, and not treat them like children. They need to be comfortable around you. I'm at a point where I can joke around and talk normally to my students, which makes education for them easier and more enjoyable.
Even though I've never settled down with a wife and family, being a teacher fills that void.
I can't help but smile as I sit here in the teacher's lounge thinking about how thankful I am for how well my life turned out.
