A thought popped into my head after my rendezvous with Kenneth. I have three classes throughout the day; one in the morning, one before lunch, and one in the afternoon. Then I grade papers and plan lessons. Different kids each class. The morning students were fine, and I guess I'll see what the afternoon group is like in a few minutes. I'll have some more time to figure myself out after that.
A few kids come in, chattering. I greet them cheerfully and hold my breath. If they're anything like the group before them, this will be tough.
"Good afternoon Mr. Baldi!" they say in between laughter, waving.
I let out a sigh of relief.
Class goes perfectly fine. The kids entered happy and are now leaving happy.
Kenneth enters the classroom after the final student exits.
"So... I take it that it was only your second group of students that acted weird?" he questions.
"Yeah," I reply.
He nods and walks up to my desk quietly, pulling a chair up behind him.
"How are we feeling now?" he asks in a sort of cautious tone, taking a seat.
"Better," I answer.
"That's good to hear. So, I spoke with some of the other teachers, and they are to report to me if anything seems off. None of them noticed anything weird so far. I say we give it another day, and if your students continue to act strange, you need to confront them about it. I know you gave them a chance today.
"If tomorrow shows no improvement, I'll talk to them. Sound good?"
"Yeah. Yeah, it does." I look at Kenneth. That feeling is cascading from head to toe again.
When he held my hands...
"Alright. Take some time to yourself," he begins. "I'll take any work you have."
"Just lessons and notes today, nothing to grade. But thank you," I say.
"Oh, that's perfect." Kenneth stands up from his chair and places it back where he got it. "In the meantime, give yourself a break. You could really use one."
"Roger that."
He begins walking to the door.
"Kenneth, wait," I say absentmindedly.
Why did I say that? What's the follow-up to that? He turns around to face me, standing in the doorway.
He waits for me to say something. But I don't know what to say.
"Uh, do you mind closing the door on the way out?"
"No problem," he answers after briefly studying my expression.
The light reflecting on the floor from outside the class becomes skinnier until it disappears along with Kenneth, and the creaking door closes with a click.
I finally allow my muscles to relax. I breathe. My face feels flushed, and I sit back in my chair and rub my temples. Now alone, I allow a groan to escape my mouth. This is all too much for me.
I need to take Kenneth's advice and figure out how to make this bother me less.
But, it's not just the students that are making my feelings act out of line.
Sure, they're definitely another branch in the fire. And sure, I'm finding out weird things about myself because of their alteration in behavior. But there's something else making me crazy.
Something else making me doubt who I am.
Someone else.
The principal. My best friend.
Kenneth.
