she told him him she loved him, and so she did
but when he slapped her the first time she felt misled
her head was woozy, a foggy haze was her sight
seconds later he was kneeling before her asking her if she was alright
she said she was and time moved on
it must've been a fluke, a mistake, he would never treat her wrong

the next month she was caught in his furious mood
and the following moment he had her in a chokehold against the car hood
she couldn't breathe, she was gasping for air
later she looked at the hand-marks in the mirror feeling despair
he swooped in with a peck to her cheek
and showed her the necklace he bought for her the next week
he said she loved him, but now she wasn't sure
but she gave him one more chance, that surely couldn't hurt

one night after a dinner out
he was stressing out about work, fuming words he was ready to spout
but instead of venting, sitting down to talk
he grabbed her by her hair, throwing her down, a new mark
she said she would leave him if he didn't stop
but when it happened again, she tried to go to the cops

she was driving in the dark after fleeing his house
her heart was racing, a horrible game of cat and mouse
she turned right and heard a chime from her phone
but before she could check, from her car she was thrown
she landed on the pavement, a bloodied, broken mess
and he was there beside her, stroking her hair saying: "i love you best"
his truck was there too, smashed into her car
and as he said sweet-nothings into the night
her eyes glazed over, losing their last bit of fight.
