He's The Hottest Guy In School And I'm The New Girl

Heather's POV

My phone was ringing and Luke was gone. Probably no big deal but I just couldn't help a little anxiety creep into my gut.

"Hello?" I picked up the phone with a slightly groggy voice.

"Heather it's Leo, I thought we were going to meet but I don't see you anywhere?"

"When was this decided?" I giggled.

"I talked to SOMEBODY on the phone earlier" he sounded aggravated.

"I'll come over now, where at?"
"McDonalds?"
"Alright I'll dress and come over!"

"You aren't dressed?" he stuttered a bit surprised. "I mean just that it's the afternoon and you know normally people are dressed and.."
"Leo.. can I ask something, not to be weird but just I'm curious."

"Sure" he sounded worried.

"Why do you want to hangout so bad?"

"You seem like a good friend Heather." He chuckled, "Why else?"

I felt stupid and embarrassed, maybe he hadn't understood my real question.
"Sounds great I'll be right there!" I faked enthusiasm.

************later at McDonalds**************

"So yeah just finished with my Bachelors degree in Biochemistry and now it's on to graduate school."

"Dang that's so many more years of school!" I shook my head at the thought of wandering to find classes at the ripe old age of 23.

"What are you even trying to be?"

Leo smirked a little "Well....TRYING to be a doctor. Emphasis on the 'trying'"

"How's That even possible you must be a genius!" I stammered a little.

"Well Heather I've gotta level with you, actually an animal doctor."

"Oh wow" I laughed and he smiled. It was a big smile, he probably smiles a lot, probably attracts lots of old cat ladies with that smile...probably some young pretty ones too.

"Yeah me and a few friends are going to the beach this weekend, everyone's bringing a friend or date and I can't think of anyone around here on short notice but you, interested?" He grinned.

"Yeah I'd say I'm interested."

His smile became a little forced, kinda staring at me.

"Leo..? I said yes. I'm interested in going."

"Alright alright geez no silence around you chatty Katheri- I mean Kathy."

"What did you say?" I was startled.

"Chatty Kathy you twit. I'll call up my friends and tell them that I've secured a plus one."

"Okay I'll let my boyfriend know." I smiled, reassured, it had sounded like he'd almost said Katherine.

"Boyfriend? Woo woo Mrs popular, that must've been your big BF I talked to on the phone earlier."

"You called earlier? Oh great Luke's probably about to go attack dog. Do you see him around?"

We scanned the booths around us and I saw a familiar blonde head outside on the sidewalk, looking at us with red angry eyes.

Luke turned and stalked off.

"I see him outside, I'll be right back, gotta go calm the storm."

Leo nodded "I'm sorry to cause a fuss but he's got right to worry, pretty girlfriends should be kept under a watchful eye, he's lucky you're just with me, any other guy would be making moves like crazy about now."

I was feeling nervous "He's not normally like this, he's just had a lot of experience with cheating girlfriends and I bet seeing this is bringing back bad memories."

"I get it, I've been on both ends of that deal Baby." He smiled again.

"What do you mean?" I got up to go chase Luke.

"Oh nothing, I'll see you later Heather, go chase down your boy toy."

I giggled like he'd made a joke but he seemed serious, or hopeful. Like he was wishing me and Luke would be temporary.

"See you later Leo, thanks for meeting up" I rushed out with my purse to go find Luke.

He was waiting outside when I stepped out into the afternoon sun. It was a hazy day, a lazy day. I wanted to go back home and curl up next to Luke, better sort this out quick.

"Luke he's just a friend I met not too long ago, I'm sorry that you picked up a call and got startled by a mans voice."

"Heather. I know that guy."

"What how? He's like 26 or something I'm sure you don't run in the same circles."

"I just really don't want to have this conversation right now. Why didn't you even tell me that you were meeting some guy, didn't you learn your lesson from last time?" He was fuming.

"I'm- I'm sorry..he seems harmless."

"Well he's not. You wanna know where I've seen that guy before?" Luke stepped closer and grabbed my wrist.

"That's the guy that I caught with Katherine in my fucking bedroom the day we broke up. So yeah he might seem harmless to you," Luke squeezed my wrist, "but he's definitely undressing you in his head thinking of ways to get you alone. Tell me if that's harmless to you Heather?"

He was squeezing my wrist hard, right where Ryan had. I yelped, tears welling up.

"I'm-I'm sorry I just.." he let go of my wrist and shook his head "I didn't mean to." He hurriedly pulled me into a hug.

"I'm sorry I just get worked up thinking about guys taking advantage of you, hurting you."

I closed my eyes and felt the tears blot my mascara.
