What is normal?
Normal means conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.
So when they tell us to be normal, the tell us to conform to a standard?
What is that standard?
Is that standard liking what the crowd likes?
Liking all the same music, all the same sports, and all the same classes?
Well, what if we don't like songs that talk about sex or love?
What if we all don't like sports like Volleyball or Basketball?
What if we don't like wearing makeup?
What if we don't like fitting in?
If we were told to be normal and fit into standards, what are those standards and who chooses them?
I know I didn't because I like K-Pop and Rock, I can't stand makeup, I find coloured hair and facial piercings cute, plus I don't do much.
Is it you?
Or does it follow the majority rule?
A month before I wrote this, I got a call from a friend who was at this thing that happens every year called "Art in the Park."
And I was singing BTS songs when I didn't realize that I accidentally picked up.
I screamed because my bias was being ageyo.
Then he asked "Hannah, are you okay?"
I jumped and said, "Yeeeaaah. Just screaming because Min Yoongi saying inspires wrong and it is the cutest thing ever and then Jungkook came in and AHHHH!"
His girlfriend overheard this and asked, "You like K-Pop? Can't you be normal for once?"
I hung up and went back to screaming Mic Drop in Korean.
Later, I texted her "Why do you want me to be normal? You have always shown me it's okay to be weird."
No response.
Now we don't talk.
I guess what I am trying to say is it's okay to not be normal and its okay not to be normal.
Because at the end of the day, it is okay to like things others like, but it's not okay to be just like the crowd.
I know I don't want to be part of the crowd, I'm scared of them.
But don't be normal, be yourself.
Because what is normal?
