"Don't let one thing control you"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Erif," I shouted, bracing myself for the blistering heat that would come when the spell connected with the target dummy. Just on instinct, I ducked to feel the wind of Griffin's wings as he launched himself over me to fetch the dummy, I was about to stand but was suddenly confused to find that as I got up, the ground got closer. Then, the pain hit my back.

Sorry Kiero. Griffin's voice bonded through the thought message we shared and I could hear him trying not to laugh at me.

Really Griffin? You had to knock me over? I waited for him to respond but no response came. I thought through the reasons that he would not respond. Then, of course, my mind immediately jumped to thinking that he had been attacked.

"Griffin?" I hollered through the thought speak, but as I was afraid of, no response came. I let my head roll back in a sigh as I called forth the magic to my mind.

"Revoh," I muttered, and as soon as the word had finished, I closed my eyes and felt the solidness of the ground leave and, as always, it felt so good to not be connected to it anymore. I arched my back and let my feet swing into the air to kick myself higher. I opened my eyes and looked down, seeing that the magic had done its job, and I now hovered five feet above the ground. I let a small smile curl onto my face and then it blew away like fog. My eyes scanned around the room, only to see the tall green grass that my magic keeps alive, and the image of the sky from the first world.

Out of nowhere, I saw it from the corner of my eye, the grass on my far left had twitched! I leaned forward and willed the magic to move me closer. I was ready for anything. I even had the first combat word in my mind ready. It twitched again, and shuffled forward as if something or someone was moving inside of it. I sent a mental beacon forward, searching for any Karri gold,(the only thing that could harm my physical body) and to my surprise I found nothing. My shoulders slumped back a bit knowing that Griffin was safe because he, too could only be hurt by the gold.

Then, it happened, a huge brown and tan shape lunged from the grass, and I saw its claws extended.

Claws? I shook my head clearing the thought and I let the magic word go. "Pots." A small bubble expanded around me, and everything inside of it stopped moving. Because of my magic, the bubble was tinted navy blue. I blinked rapidly to see a tan and brown claw inches from my head and a roar was stopped short in the air. My ears continued ringing. I shook my head and floated back down to the ground and stepped around the mass of fur and feathers. Floating in front of me, was Griffin.

"He must have been trying to make a joke and get a good laugh. Hmm, I will show him what's funny", I thought. I still didn't think it was funny but I moved behind him and released the spell that had stop time in the bubble and Griffin crashed forward almost falling into the ground. He landed on his paws though and whipped around with a huge smile on his face and spoke through the thought speak.

Did you think I would fall onto the ground? I heard his growl the stops and goes again its his small chuckle.

"No I did not think you would with out a little help!" I let a slightly creepy smile cross my lips for a split second, and called on the wind. it blew into his wings and the sudden force knocked him backwards. I let the wind roll away from his body and as always, it left.

Fine... Griffin stood up and did something he only does after we "Wrestle." He bowed down his head, the universal sign of submission. I merely nodded at him because we didn't talk a whole lot. We simply shared emotions through the link we had.

A loud screech split the air and then stopped. It repeated and I knew what it meant. I ran to the door which opened on its own, responding to the thought message I had commanded. It's so helpful with this upgrade now, I think, and not even using magic. The place bends to my will. I closed my eyes, not being able to believe I had just thought something so.. Childish

I covered my eyes as the screen blared to life and a face covered in a huge scowl, glared down at me.

"What's the location of the attack?" I asked, ignoring his scowling face.

"Your late. Where were you?" I waved the insult aside and chose to listen to the smile in his voice.

"Training as usual." I braced myself for the argument he always put up when I told him I was training.

"You really need to do something other than train in your free time, Kiero." He looked concerned. I gave him the look to just forget about it and tell me where I was supposed to be going and what I was fighting. "I know I know, you train to stay strong because some new monster, blah blah blah...your going to Fire island and it looks like a beast of balance."

"Thank you for the information I shall be back shortly." I bowed to the screen and turned it off. I turned around, running the known information about Fire Island inside my head.

Population: 3,000. Natural Resources start with wood, coal, and charcoal. What it offers to the public: heat and light.

When I had finished the list, I saw Griffin running towards me. I locked my fingers into his feather/fur mix and swung up onto his back. The back wall opened, revealing the bright, cloudless sky and we launched into it, banking to the right towards Fire Island.
