Chapter 5: Behind Closed Doors

My eyes that were once locked on the shut door had now dropped to the floor, my body turning to face the others, "Why can't he just listen to me for once in his pathetic life?"

"Vivian," Abe warned, narrowing his eyes at me. He was obviously questioning my way of phrasing.

My brows softened, my eyelids growing somewhat heavy as I looked at him, defeated. I sighed, "I know, he probably knows what he's doing, and he usually goes out on his own. I just really worry about him; I have been ever since Liz left the bureau. I'm probably just overreacting."

Professor Broom strolled up to me, observing me as he did. "Maybe; maybe not. I'm just relieved that you're paying close attention to his new found behavior."

"Who hasn't at this point? In all the years I've been here, I've never been able to not handle him. But all he ever seems to do nowadays is argue," I growled, breaking eye-contact.

I could see that Abe had taken out his stack of books. Whatever Hellboy was doing, he needed some idea of what he was up against. Go figure, I thought.

"Like I said, Professor, maybe I'm just overreacting. Watch as nothing too unusual happens. It's always the same thing: we arrive at the scene, the monster comes in to fight us, and we kill it. Simple as that."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that," Abe responded from afar.

I tilted my head, walking away from the professor to Abe and Myers, "Why? Having the same feelings that I am?"

Abe shook his head, "Not exactly. But, from what I'm finding, we may be in a bit of trouble."

Myers turned to me, "Abe's been telling me we're apparently up against some kind of powerful demon? What was it called again?"

"Sammael, the Desolate One, son of Nergal. Also known as the Lord of the Shadows, Harbinger of Pestilence, Seed of Destruction, Hound of Resurrection--"

"Hound of Resurrection?" I scoffed, "So you're telling me that this thing could be immortal or something?"

Abe looked away, uncomfortably, "That may just be the case."

"Well, that's something we haven't encountered in years. There's no way that that's the reason why my powers are going haywire though."

Abe wasn't paying much attention to me, clicking his earpiece, and chatting away with Hellboy on the other side, repeating the exact information that he had just told me. After hearing a few gunshots go off from inside the other room, Abe paused for a moment, before asking, "What? Hound of Resurrection?"

I chuckled. Hellboy obviously wasn't very pleased with that part of the information either.

At that moment, I gasped, making a sudden realization, "Wait, did you say that it's the son of Nergal? Isn't that one of those Revelation Dragon things?"

Abe turned to me suddenly, "You mean the Ogdru Jahad, the seven dragons of destruction? I'm surprised that you remembered. Yes, Nergal is one of them, meaning Sammael could in fact be an Ogdru Hem."

I backed away, slowly, remembering what I had read in the many books I'd borrowed to learn about powerful, mythical creatures. Sometimes, I now regret being someone who enjoys reading. I managed to find my voice, "That's impossible, all of the Ogdru Hem disappeared back before time, and the Ogdru Jahad were imprisoned inside golden crystal in the Abyss by the Right Hand of--"

The large door next to us was suddenly slammed into. The feeling that something was terribly wrong had returned; every hair on my body now stood on end. "Red," I whispered, hardly able to speak.

"Go to the front side. Let's go, move!" Clay shouted at the other agents.

Myers pulled out his gun, running as he shouted back to the professor, Abe, and I, "I'm going around the back!"

I started to chase after him, but a hand grabbed at my arm, pulling me back, stopping me. I whipped around to see Abe.

"I can't let that kid go out on his own!" I protested as I yanked my arm out of his grasp.

"Vivian, if he's going after Hellboy, he'll be fine. We need you here. What if something comes back here? I don't want to be left here alone with the professor. One person who's armed can't fight against that thing. Please," he pleaded.

My heart was torn between two ways, but I knew he was right. I couldn't just leave these two alone here. Besides, we had plenty of agents outside already.

I could see his expression soften, his emotions starting to get under control as his mind shifted through mine. We stared at each other for a moment, before I sighed, nodding.

"Thank you," Abe whispered as I joined them.

Outside, we could hear the screams from the civilians. I was so focused on all of the commotion that welled up inside me, as everyone's emotions shot through my body. My vision began to blur and my ears rang.

I thought of the gentle sound of rain, a trick that I learned over the years when my powers became too much. Rain was a sound that I had always enjoyed, so when I was focused on it, everything seemed to fade away. Only the faintest tingle of aftershocks remained; the ringing in my ears slowly stopped and my vision cleared.

I didn't seem to notice that the pair had now opened the door to see what had happened within the room that Hellboy and that monster were once in. When I finally did notice, I jumped in my step as I went to keep up with them.

My eyes wandered outside one of the translucent windows and I gasped as I could just barely see what was happening. Both turned to me before walking closer and seeing it too. Outside, I could see a very frightening creature running on all fours across the busy street, followed by Hellboy and Myers. While Hellboy was easily avoiding traffic, Myers wasn't so lucky, being struck by one of the oncoming cars.

I looked at Abe and Professor Broom, bright amber eyes widening at them, "Please," I begged, "I have to go out there and help Myers before he gets more hurt than he already is."

Just before Abe had time to protest, Professor Broom nodded, "We'll be fine. Go."

I could feel the air rush against me as I sprinted, but it felt somewhat lighter now that my ears and tail were concealed. Not having the chance to feel the wind flow against them like they should was odd, but being in the middle of a city, I knew that I couldn't just be waving around my true identity. I caught sight of Myers shaking in the middle of the road, turning towards me as I ran in his direction.

"Myers, are you alright?" I asked, skidding to a halt, looking down upon him.

He raised his left hand, and I could see the blood starting to swell up, dripping slowly down his arm. He seemed to be in shock, but I knew that he'd come out of it soon.

I offered him my hand, and for a moment, he hesitated, confused. I smirked, "Can you just let me help you up." He slowly grabbed on with his unscathed hand before I pulled him up onto his feet. "Come on, we should head back to the others and patch you up."
