My entire body felt like it was screaming as I pushed myself forward to chase after Hellboy. However, as we ventured further, he eventually disappeared into the darkness. There were so many twists and turns in this labyrinth that I lost track of where I was.
"Damn it, Red," Clay huffed, unsure of which path to take, "Did you see where he went?"
My ears dropped back, "No, I lost him. How the hell can we lose a big, red demon for Christ's sake?"
We continued venturing the halls, and I hardly seemed to notice that my shoes had become drenched from the flooded ground. I removed my gun from its holster, waiting for something to jump out at us, as I heard a trail of heavy footsteps nearby.
I could sense the figure nearby, but I couldn't see them. I wanted to follow his trail, and stop whatever antics he's pulling on us. Meanwhile, Clay had other plans and continued to search for Red. I didn't want to lose the only other person I had with me, so I trailed behind him, ignoring the fading sound of winding gears.
As Clay peered cautiously around every corner, a pit formed in my stomach and my heart seemed to drop, a common feeling I would get if something went wrong. I stopped, which Clay noticed. He turned to look at me, "You okay?"
"I'm fine," I lied, tucking away my gut feeling. I didn't want to worry the only backup I had now, and besides, it was probably nothing. Maybe Red had found that figure and was fighting it off somewhere and getting beaten up like he always does.
The dip in my body seemed to fade away. Yeah, it was nothing; my body was just playing tricks on me. There is nothing for me to worry about, I thought. Deep down, though, I knew that ignoring my gut feeling was a bad thing. But, most of the recent cases outside this mission have been false alarms and minor injuries from something dumb and nothing dealing with monsters. So, of course, I would ignore it if this feeling faded away that quickly.
In an instant, an even worse shock took over my body, making me nearly collapse from the sensation. Clay rushed over to me, grabbing me before I fell, "Vivian, you're not fine. What's going on?"
"I'm having one of those feelings again," I admitted, "It went away quickly but now it's so much worse. It's probably nothing. That's what it's like when it goes away fast. Hellboy got himself hurt like always or maybe Quarry and Moss just dropped something on themselves, is all it is."
Clay stared at me, "Vivian, it may be nothing, but you won't know unless you follow that feeling. Especially in the situation we're in. If you ignored that feeling before and it came back, it may have gotten worse because you weren't there to stop it from happening."
My eyes flew open, understanding he was right. Who knows what could be going on. I nodded and stood up, "I'm going to head back to find the others, you continue to look for Red."
Clay nodded, and I turned, running as fast as I could, following my tracks back to where we started. The feeling returned, but I could feel it was leading me back to Clay. Why? I wondered, Clay is going to be fine without me, especially if he comes across Hellboy.
It felt like minutes had gone by, and the feeling in my chest was tearing me two ways; one towards Clay, and the other towards the reservoir. The light on my belt flashed blue, a signal from Abe. I continued to race to the tracks, hearing the sound of incoming trains again.
Moss and Quarry were nowhere to be found; the only thing I managed to seek out was the sense of dread. I couldn't even find my voice, staring down the tunnel we entered from. I saw a lifeless body, and with closer inspection, I realized it was Moss.
My mouth dropped slightly before seeing that in the room where Abe had departed from the group, there was another body, and I knew it was Quarry's. There were large, wide, bite marks across their corpses, making me come to the conclusion that they had encountered Sammael.
I froze, hearing the sound of quiet gasps nearby. I looked around, wondering if one of them had survived the attack. As I looked up towards one of the walls in the room, where a line of showers stood, I could just see the outline of someone who was barely moving. I cupped my hand to my mouth, muffling a silent scream of horror, realizing it was Abe, who was now drenched in blood.
I rushed over to him and dropped to my knees. Large claw-marks were scraped across his chest, releasing dark blue blood at a rapid rate. I could feel tears building in my eyes and I bit my lip to stifle from crying out, "Abe, please. Stay with me."
His eyelids slowly opened, heavily, and his usually bright eyes were now dull and weak. I watched as his gills hardly flapped, and only did when he took gasps of air as he stared blankly at me, "Sammael... He..."
I shushed him, gently, letting the tears run down my cheeks, "Don't try to talk, save your energy."
He moved his hand weakly to mine, and held it, knowing it would be better to talk to me in my mind. I found the eggs, but I lost the Reliquary in the process. I barely managed to escape Sammael when I was attacked. When I came up here, I found them dead while you, Red, and Clay were missing.
I nodded, and I could hear the sound of gunshots in the distance, which startled me, unsure of who was firing them. But when the gut feeling returned, I knew something bad had happened again.
Guilt flooded me with what had happened, resting my forehead on Abe's shoulder. This is all my fault, I thought to Abe, I had a gut feeling, and if I had followed it, maybe Quarry and Moss wouldn't be dead, and I could have gotten to you sooner.
Don't blame yourself for that, you couldn't have known, he replied, his breathing calming down as his eyes shut.
There was a static on the radio before I heard a familiar, gruff voice, "Does any agent copy? Quarry, Moss, Lycan, man down!"
I gasped slightly. That feeling pushing me back to Clay earlier was trying to tell me to stay with him. I cried harder on Abe's shoulder, realizing that Abe would've been fine without me, and because I left, Clay became defenseless and he, too, was compromised. Why do I keep putting people's lives on the line? Why do I keep screwing things up?
I turned on my receiver, "Agent Lycan, I hear you Red."
"Why are you guys not responding? Clay is hardly breathing and I have that masked guy lifeless right beside him!" he growled.
"Sammael attacked us. Quarry and Moss are dead. Abe's losing a lot of blood, barely clinging to life. Please, we have to get out of here now," I tried to fight off tears again.
I glanced over to see that Abe had gone unconscious, and watched his still unstable breathing. Seeing him nearly dead finally brought me to the realization that the thought of losing him would shatter me. I wanted him to be safe; he had to live.
I nuzzled my head in Abe's shoulder, biting my lip to the point of making it bleed. Finally, I heard Red's voice again from my receiver, "I'm on my way."
