My Best Best Friend

"You worthless sack of shit!"

First hit.
"Why can't you be normal?!"
Second hit.

An arm held the fist back.
"David! Please! She's only a child!" A feminine voice pleaded shakily.
"This isn't a child, Marie! This is an abomination!"

My nose was bleeding. My breath was shaky. My eye was bruised and swollen.
I felt as if my heart was beating out of my chest and my face pulsating.

He shoved me to the ground and grabbed a ripped off a spindle from a nearby chair and began to beat me with it. I tried to cover my face to the best of my ability, but it didn't do me much good.

His hair was grimy and sweaty; he was panting hard.

He went for one last blow; stomping on my face.

The bottom of his shoe shot towards my face.

I gasped for air, shooting out of bed.
I looked out the window. It was still dark out.
I checked the clock on my bedside table.
3:17 AM
Great

I laid in bed for a full twenty minutes, yet I still couldn't go back to sleep.
Screaming echoed in my head.

It was mine.

I can't get a good night sleep anymore.
Actually, I can't remember a night when I wasn't an insomniac.
Ugh...

This process repeated about every few hours.
Every. Single. Night.

"Rubes?" Amethyst asked.
I turned my head towards her.
"Yeah?" I answered raspily.
"You okay?" She asked.
"Y-yeah... just... just nightmares again,"
"Wanna talk about it?"
"I would but... every time I wake up I completely forget,"
I know that's what happens with some people when they dream, but this is different. I don't remember many details about the dream. All I remember is the consistent screaming. I can feel the pain, but not remember what caused it.
"You wanna sleep with me again?"
I love Amethyst. She's the best, erm, best best friend in the goddamn world. She loves me back. We care about each other, but I've been worrying her ever since... ever since I started having these nightmares.

Amethyst admits that she has a good idea on what caused them, but says it's for my own good that I don't remember.
"Sure," I sighed.

I crawled in her bed and we cuddled together like a sleepover.
"Y'know something?" I asked.
"Hm?" She mumbled, half asleep.
"I think no matter how immature and rebellious you act, you're one of the most caring people I know. Love you, dude," I said.
I could hear her mouth crease upward through the pillow.
"Thanks, Rubes," she mumbled.

I fell asleep once more.

"Heyyyy, just stopping by to see if you have any more Chaaps," a friendly voice said.
"...hello?" called the same voice.

I groaned.

The figure walked up to me and gasped.
Everything was blurry.
My right eye was swollen shut and my left eye seemed to be nearly closed shut, making everything look darker.

The figure shook me as I heard buttons being dialed on a cell phone.

Medical machines beeped as I lay in a comfy bed. I felt a little safer than I typically had in a while. But not safe enough.

"Miss, do you know what happened here?"
I heard the voice from earlier answer, "no,"

More beeping.

"Thank you so much, Amethyst," said an unfamiliar voice. It was masculine.
"Yes, thank you. You too, Dr. Sherman," said another unfamiliar voice. It was more feminine than the previous voice.

The voices began to fade out.
But then after a while fade back in.
"We've run a few cat scans and discovered that whatever caused your daughter to be in this state resulted in some possible memory loss, but we're not exactly sure what she'd forgotten. It's a common type of memory loss called, 'selective memory loss'."
"What's that?" the masculine voice asked.
"SML is where a patient only forgets certain parts of her memory such as an address, middle name, birthday, and so-on. The effects could be temporary with time or certain things that could remind the patient of a forgotten memory, but it may also be permanent."
"Thank you, Doctor. Will Ruby be able to come home with us today?"
"You might want to keep her here for a day or so until she regains her strength, but after that, it should be fine to take her home," the doctor answered.
"One last question, if you don't mind, Dr. Sherman,"
"I don't mind at all,"
"Do you think she could forget about her..." he began to whisper into the doctor's ear, but I could still hear, "disease?"
"Her... disease, sir?"
"She's gay. Do you think she could forget about being gay?"
"I don't believe that you can forget your sexuality for it is more-so a feeling than a memory and the feeling is a reflex once you're in love and such, but I guess there could be a very slim chance?"
The doctor seemed unsure of his answer. I don't believe he's necessarily studied specifically on the topic of psychology nor sexuality.

My eyesight got a bit better and I was able to see what was going on.
"A-amethyst?"
Amethyst breathed a sigh in relief that she wasn't someone I forgot.
"Hey, Rubes,"
Amethyst walked over to me and sat in an open spot on the medical bed, laying beside me.
"Do you remember what happened?"
"N-no... should I?" I struggled to remember. Beads of sweat began to form on my forehead.
"Hey, hey, don't stress yourself, okay?" She tried to calm me down. It kind of worked.
"Damn, that was quite a beating you took," She lightly touched my black eye and inspected it.
"Who the hell would be strong enough to do that much damage to you, shit..." Amethyst began to grow suspicious and looked down at the man and woman's hands.
"Hey!" She shouted, "Dr. S!"
"Yes?" Dr. Sherman answered.
"How would Ruby's dad have bruised knuckles? I didn't see his knuckles bruised yesterday when I was hanging with Ruby," Amethyst asked.
Dr. Sherman looked down at the man's hand and realized Amethyst could be onto something.
"Sir, what were you doing yesterday?"
"Yesterday, doc?"
"Yes, yesterday. The day your daughter was found beaten and bruised,"
"I- uh," he stuttered.
Dr. Sherman didn't seem too pleased with the man's suspicious stuttering.
"Security!"
The security guards came.
"Secure this man while I call the police and inform them about their new 'visitor',"

Amethyst looked at me in concern. She held me tight. I couldn't clearly grasp exactly what was happening and who this man and woman were, but I still felt safe in her arms.
Like I said, we're like sisters- but with less arguing and sibling rivalry.

"It's okay, Rubes. It'll be okay," She kept whispering in my ear as I lay half conscious.
"He's gone now. They're gone now. You're safe,"
I actually felt safe this time.

I jerked out of bed once more.
I heard snoring coming from the other side of the bed. I looked at the clock on my phone.
7:33 AM
I'll sleep for a few more hours. Amethyst seems to agree with that idea.

I finally dozed off to sleep without any interruptions. At least, not for the rest of tonight... which honestly isn't a lot of time, but it's better than nothing.
