Katniss ran forwards, throwing her arms around the small eight-legged horse.
"Sleipnir," she whispered into his manes, and Sleipnir nuzzled her happily.
She let go, and Sleipnir stumbled on his feet.
Katniss gasped, reaching into her pockets.
"You must be starving," she whispered, holding out a handful of oats, which the foal devoured eagerly.
She tried to pick him up, failing miserably. Sleipnir was still young, but already a considerable weight.
"Let me try," Loki's soft voice advised, and Katniss jolted slightly. She's almost forgotten that the prince had come with her.
He crouched down, holding out his hand to Sleipnir.
"Careful," Katniss warned, "he doesn't take well to..."
Sleipnir bounced up to Loki excitedly.
"...strangers."
She watched as Loki ruffled the foal's manes, and then gently lifted Sleipnir off the floor.
"You know each other?" she asked, and Loki smirked.
"Yes, we do."

Title: Saving Sleipnir — as always, up for debate.
Main character(s): Loki, Sleipnir, and an OC I'm calling Katniss here but that's obviously up for debate too — it's the author's OC, after all.
Timeline: Semi-AU, so not exactly something we can pinpoint. I'd say after all Marvel movies except Infinity War and Ragnarok. The story is set on both Asgard and Earth, and Loki is alive and on Asgard, not imprisoned but not fully trusted either. HYDRA will probably get involved, so if you can find a canon way to make that work go ahead.
General idea: Odin's favourite mare, Illydra, gave birth to a young eight-legged foal while the Allfather was elsewhere in the Nine Realms. Frigga dubbed it Sleipnir, and both Loki and his maid, Katniss, fell in love with the small horse on sight. Neither knew that the other had a soft spot for the gangly-legged creature, and they were always coming up with excuses to see him without the other finding out.
So understandably, it caused considerable riot when Odin returned several weeks later, only to order Sleipnir to be killed.
Katniss set up a plan to rescue Sleipnir, and managed to move him to elsewhere on the castle grounds where he was hidden from everyone. The guards, too terrified of Odin's wrath to admit that Sleipnir had escaped them, said that they'd given off the horse to the people who were to kill him. Odin believed them, and Loki was heartbroken, but managed to mask his feelings as always.
The evening after Sleipnir's "death", Katniss nervously asked Loki to help her get somebody off Asgard. Somebody whom Odin wanted dead. Someone who Odin thought was dead, and if he found out that that was not the case, well, it would be disastrous.
Sleipnir.
Loki agreed, keeping his excitement hidden as he was accustomed to doing. They managed to get Sleipnir all the way to the Bifrost, putting the foal under a spell that made him look like a large dog. Heimdall agreed to send Sleipnir to Midgard, and Loki insisted that Katniss went with to ensure the foal's safety.
Katniss, knowing full-well that she could be executed for treason in Asgard, agreed. She and Sleipnir were then Bifrost-ed to Earth, where they ended up in a desert. They made their way to an oasis where they spent the night. When they woke up, they were in the center of an army camp that had been set up around them.
Katniss decided that their best chance of survival was joining the army, and fight against "HYDRA", whatever that was. Sleipnir needed a horse-parent, and these men and women had horses.
So they joined the army, marching off to whatever would come.
Anddddd the rest of the plot is up to the author.

◊ Loki would visit Midgard in various disguises to check up on Sleipnir and Katniss, and always scared Katniss out of her mind. I can totally see that happening XD.
◊If you wanted to you could find a way in which Sleipnir and Katniss communicate, so that they have more than just a pet-owner relationship. (If a character can talk it always alters their character strongly, so that's up to the author if they want that.)
