TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES: Chapter 4

After Mercy went, I felt a sigh of relieve. I had to recollect myself and work towards fixing my relationship with Mike, but before I could do that, I had to get some answers from him. He had to explain to me all that I wanted to know about Mercy. I had to know what prompted him to bring her into the house without my consent. Why did he choose to hurt me that much? Was I not enough for him? He had to give me good and satisfying answers. I therefore waited for one evening when Mike was relaxing in the house watching television and approached him. Mind you that I was not in a hurry to moving into the main house with him. I first wanted to be very sure that what happened would never repeat itself.

"Hi Mike, would you mind a little talk" I asked smiling.

"Not if it's from you my dear. Come and sit down" I moved and sat near him on the couch.

I was so nervous because I didn't know what his reaction would be.

"Mike, I just want to ask you a few questions and it's my hope that you will not find offense in me" I said lowering my eyes.

"I promise not to get mad .Ask whatever you want to know and I will gladly answer you" He said this with a wide smile on his face.

"I wish to know all about Mercy, who was she to you? Where did you meet her and why did you bring her to the house knowing very well that this would affect me" I asked looking directly into his eyes.

I had to gain courage for me to ask all those questions. Mike was quiet and I could see that he was not comfortable with this discussion.

"Hey, answer me, I am waiting" I found myself losing patience and was now shouting.

"Ok, be calm. I will explain everything to you" He said standing up.

He told me that he too was not happy with what he had done but was forced by circumstances to do so.

"What circumstances, I need to know" I shouted once more but this time with tears in my eyes.

He turned to look at me and I could see that he felt so sorry for me. He then explained to me what transpired. He told me that he loved me so much such that he did not want to see me suffer. He also added that he had contracted Mercy to come to the house on the agreement that she would mistreat me so that I could leave the house and forget about him. I understood none of what he was saying and I demanded for a clear explanation. He went further to explain that he thought himself not worthy of me because his character was wanting. He loved going to parties, spending time with friend in clubs and was not born again which was the direct opposite of me. I on the other hand was a cool person to stay with and rarely fell into trouble with anybody.

He added that he had paid Mercy to do what she was doing. They had agreed that she would pretend to be his girlfriend in order to make me jealous. She would further do anything else to exert pressure on me in order to make me hate him prompting me to leave the house as long as it would not hurt me. But Mercy came to the house with another motive, to steal. Mike looked really sad and worried.

Tears were beginning to form in his eyes, which was a clear indication that he truly regretted his actions. "Even though Mercy stayed in my room, there was nothing going on between us. We never shared a bed as she slept on the sofa. All the romance that you saw was just fake. Nothing was going on between me and Mercy and I never felt anything for her." As he said this tears were dropping down his cheek.

"It's okay. I understand and feel your pain, but you could have discussed your feelings with me before taking such an action. I could have understood you mike. I love you so much and nothing would ever make me leave you."I said hugging him tightly to console him. He asked for forgiveness and I forgave him but with an assurance that he would never hide his feelings from me again. He made me a promise and then asked me out for supper. I was so happy that I had made such a bold move that bore fruits. Mike was mine and mine alone. During our supper, Mike made me promise to go back to the main house from the servant quarters and he too promised to maintain his respect for me till marriage.

Mike and I lived happily and comfortably. I was now partially at peace with myself. The only problem that I had to handle now was that of my family as I had to make peace with them. I was living quite a dangerous life. I had lied to mike that I had no family and that I only had my grandmother surviving. I felt guilty but I felt that I could not tell him the truth before making peace with them. I made an effort to reach Kevoh my brother on phone but he did not pick up. I tried several times but there was still no answer. I tried calling mark but he too did not answer the call. It truly dawned to me that I was left with no other family but Mike alone. I hoped that he would never break the trust I had in him.

One night Mike woke me up in the middle of the night saying that he was not feeling well and that he wanted me to call Sam his friend to drive him to the hospital. I knew how to drive very well as I had grown up in a rich family that owned so many cars but Mike did not know this as I had never told him anything about my family, I only lied to him that I was an orphan.

"There is no need to call Mark, just hand over the car keys to me and get into the car" I told him.

"What! Who is going to drive the car since I am not in a position to do so?" he said looking surprised.

"Just get into the car, remember you have to hurry up as you are not feeling well" I said heading to the car.

Mike had a number of cars and I had to ask him which car to use. He pointed at the car and I got in and ignited it. He looked so surprised but I assured him that he had to trust me. I knew back in my mind that I had so many questions from Mike to answer after the hospital but I just hopped he would ask me nothing. Mike was treated and we drove back to the house. I was glad that when we got to the house he just wished me a good night and then went to sleep. I went smiling all the way to my room. I was glad Mike had not asked me about anything. I expected him to ask me questions like: Where did you learn how to drive? Where did your family live? Who was your father, did you have brothers and sisters and so on. I knew it was not over yet and I speculated that he would bring up that topic and so I had to prepare very good answers before he could do so.
