TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES: Chapter Five.
In the morning the following day, I woke up before cock crow to perform my morning chores. I did the cleaning and then prepared breakfast. After I had finished all these I went to check on Mike and I found him awake but still in bed.
“Good morning Mike, how was your night and how do you feel now” I asked him.
“Good morning, I feel better now but I am off duty today” he responded.
“I thank God that you are now doing better. Please freshen up and come for breakfast” I said smiling and went to set the table.
After a while Mike came for breakfast at the dining table and found me already waiting for him. We had breakfast together but before I could stand to clear the table, He summoned me for a talk.
“What does he want to talk about?” this question was all over my mind but I could not guess right.
I hoped that he would not ask me about the previous night because he would be so upset. There was so much that I was hiding from him about myself. I was quite nervous and hoped for the best.
I went and sat where he was sitting in the living room but this time on a different couch.
“Are you ready for a serious talk” he asked sternly.
Goodness me, I was doomed. “What kind of talk could this be? Dear Lord please save me” I prayed.
I composed myself and told him that I was ready. I stayed calmly waiting for the next question.
“Tell me more about yourself because I am confused. I am trying to understand you but this gets difficult every day. Why do I have the feeling that there is so much you are hiding from me? Please open up to me. I need to know you more” he pleaded and I could read disappointment from his face.
I really did not know what to do. What is the right time to tell him all that happened to me? What if he became upset because I hid it from him? I was really confused. My mind was wondering around trying to find answers. It was then that my helper, the small still voice inside me told me that I just had to tell Mike the truth because if he heard it from another source, there would be double trouble.
All this while, Mike was staring at me expecting me to say something. This was becoming tough but I had to brave it. I had lied to him being an orphan because I felt really useless and unwanted but it was now the time to correct my mistakes.
“I am really sorry Mike that I lied to you about my family. I have a family, yes I have a family” I said fidgeting.
“I don’t understand what you are saying, please open up” he said adjusting himself to sit properly on the couch.
“Promise me that you will not get so mad at me. Just listen to my story and then tell me if I did anything wrong because I just don’t know what to do. I am so confused Mike” I said with tears nearly rolling down my cheeks.
I explained to mike everything about my family and all the misunderstandings that led me to his town as a sales agent. I was crying as I narrated this but he encouraged me to say more. He was nodding at everything I said although he looked shocked. He wanted to hear everything and by the time I finished he was also shedding tears. This consoled me as it was an indication that he sympathized with my situation.
“What a sad story. How could you hide all this from me? Did you think that I would not help you or love you because of this? He complained.
I just shook my head and stared at him waiting for his next move but thanks to God, he understood my situation. He swore to help me expose my brothers’ wives. He remembered what Mercy was about to do to him and swore to never let my sisters in law succeed in their plans. This really consoled me and I apologized for not telling him this before. I told him that I hated talking about it as it reminded me of the good times I enjoyed with my family before. He promised to stand by me no matter what would happen. I was at ease now, never again would I hide anything from mike. He was so kind, very understanding, loving and humble to me.
Weeks passed by and life was good. I felt that innermost peace within me as I had someone to share my problems with and that was Mike. Everything seemed okay until one Saturday morning when he received a call from a male friend that he called Mark. He told me all about his friend saying that he had just married and his marriage was not good. His friend was coming to town to meet him and he requested me to accompany him I which agreed.
An hour later his friend Mark called to tell him that he was waiting for him in town. We rushed to meet him and on arrival I could not believe whom he was referring to as his friend. There stood before me my brother Mark, I wiped my eyes to make sure that I was not seeing my own things.
Before I could comprehend anything I heard Mike call my name “Kate, please meet my friend Mark. Mark this is Kate my fiancée. I was beginning to feel dizzy. We stared at each other and after a while everything begun to dim and I fainted.
