TRUE LOVE NEVER DIES: Chapter six

I woke up later that evening in the hospital and found Mike sited by my side, “What am I doing here Mike? I asked surprisingly as I could not remember anything. I took you to meet my friend Mark in the morning and you fainted. I now vividly remembered everything. I fainted because of the shock that I got after finding out that Mike knew my brother Mark. “What a coincidence! Did Mark tell Mike that he was my brother?”I could not stop thinking about that incidence. The doctor discharged me and Mike took me back to the house. I expected so many questions from him that night but he asked none. I just hoped that everything would just go on fine. Mike seemed calm giving me an assurance that he knew nothing concerning Mark. I gathered courage and asked Mike whether he had helped Mark solve his marriage problems but he told him that when I fainted Mark helped him put me in the car and then left in haste. He however didn’t understand why Mark had left in such a hurry.
He added that Mark had called him later that day when I was in the hospital and had asked him to meet him in his house during the weekend. “Mike was going to Mark’s place! Oh my goodness, what were they going to discuss” My brain could not rest a bit as I kept searching for possible answers to my questions.
The weekend was soon with us and Mike was leaving to Mark’s place that morning. I bid him farewell but deep inside my heart I was disturbed. I had not told Mike all this while that I knew Mark and I hoped that this would not stir up a problem between us in case he came to know the truth. I had lied to Mike that I fainted because I felt sick. I had lied and so I was hoping for the best. ‘
After a few hours of travel, Mike told me that had arrived at Marks place safely and that he would have a sleepover at Marks place that day. This made my heart skip, I felt as though I was slowly losing my mind from the many questions that kept flocking my mind. I just had to prepare myself for anything, after all it was my cross and I had to carry it. Later that night I called Mike to wish him a good night but from the way he sounded on the phone, I knew there was trouble. I tried comforting myself that Mike talked in that manner over the phone because he was overwhelmingly tired from the journey. I went to bed that night a very worried person.
I woke up very early the following day to make a call to Mike just to make sure that everything was fine. I called Mike and he told me that everything was okay and that he would come home later in the evening as they were going to visit Kevoh, Mark’s brother before coming home. On hearing Kevoh’s name, I just hang up as I did not want to hear more. I immediately knew that there was trouble. I waited restlessly the whole day for Mike to come home and it was not long until I heard the gateman open the gate. I went out of the house to see whether it was Mike and for sure he was the one. I went to welcome him back but he did not seem happy on seeing me. I assumed that the long journey must have made him so tired and that’s why he seemed bored.
Mike went to the house and freshened up and then had his supper as I had already prepared it. He talked about nothing all this while until after supper when he told me that he wanted to have a discussion with me. I knew I was doomed and I sensed that the subject of the discussion would be that of my brothers and for sure I was quite right.
Mike was so mad at me that I had lied to him about my fainting. I had told him that I fainted as I was feeling unwell instead of telling him that I was shocked on seeing Mark my brother with him. “Why did you pretend not to know Mark when you saw him and why have you not told me all this while that he is your brother? I s this trust is all about?” He scolded me. I had no answers for his questions as I knew I was in the wrong. He then told me that he now believed the accusations against me were, trying killing my brother’s child. I just gazed at him as he said all this. Mike had lost all his trust in me because of hiding such a sensitive thing from him. My brothers and their wives had ruined my life. “Who would ever trust me if Mike whom I loved dearly could not” I thought.
I had the prove with me, the recording that I had made of my brothers wives, but my heart kept telling me that it was not yet time to release it. I had to obey the voice within me. From the way Mike scolded me, it was a clear indication that he had had enough of me.
He started ignoring me and no longer cared about me. He even threatened to withdraw his financial assistance towards me claiming that he could no longer live with such an evil person as me. This angered me so much. Mike chose to believe my brothers the moment I hid the truth from him. He thought that since I did not tell him about knowing Mark, I was therefore trying to cover up something because if I was not guilty, there would have been nothing to hide.
Days passed by and Mike totally did want anything to do with me. Living with him had become very difficult and so I decided to seek advice on what to do from my girl friend Cynthia once again. I called and explained everything to her and she told me that it was now very difficult to restore back the trust Mike had on me. She advised that I move out and give Mike sometime to think, which I agreed. I had some savings from the money Mike was giving me and so I decided to look for a house. I found one in an estate away from where Mike was living.
I woke up one Saturday morning and told him that I was leaving the house since it seemed everything between us was over because of just one mistake. I tried to apologize to him but my plea was falling on deaf ears. I took a few steps towards the door with my luggage then looked back to see his reaction. He was just staring at me without a word and I sensed that he would have wished to say something but he just could not. I bet him farewell and left. He did not even bother to ask me where I was going. I had rented a small house on a flat and I used my little savings to pay for the rent and cater for my needs too.
I started looking for a job but got none. Months were passing by so fast and my savings would soon be exhausted. Few months later, I got a call from my grandmother that she was not feeling well and so I made up my mind to visit her. I set out the following day very early in the morning to my grandmother’s place. My grandmother loved me dearly but I could not dare tell her of the misunderstanding that was there in my family. I was therefore so lucky because no one had told her, not even my parents. On arrival, I found my grandmother seriously ill. She was very happy to see me. She shed tears of joy on seeing me as I had stayed for a while without visiting her. Little did I know that she had also called my parents and my brothers asking them to also come and see her as I heard her ask me why I didn’t arrive with them as I usually did. I told her that they had a few things to take care of and that’s why I decided to come first. With the knowledge that my brothers were on the way send a cold chill down my spine. I knew they would come with their wives and I was not comfortable. After spending a while with my grandmother, her phone rang and I peeped to see who was calling and alas! It was Kevoh calling. She answered and Kevoh told her that they were near and that they were coming to take her to the hospital.
I could not believe my ears, how would I cope with my brothers around with grandmother not knowing anything that was going on. I decided that I would tell my grandmother everything once she recovered. A few hours later the door bell rang and my brothers had arrived. I did not want to embarrass myself and so I had to think of a really quick solution to escape it. I lied to my grandmother that I had to attend to a very urgent issue and therefore had to go back but would come back soon. Since my grandmother trusted me so much, she did not object. I told her that since my brothers and their families had come, they would take very good care of her and I would return soon to stay with her until she fully recovered. She asked me to wait first until I talked to my brothers but I told her that since I was with them earlier, there was no need. She blessed me and I got out of the house through the back door as they got in through the front door. I was happy to have escaped trouble. I travelled back to my house to continue with my life hustles.
