After susan died Severus gave up. He refused to speak to Bella because she looked to much like Susan, and her family members didn't understand him so he left. He stayed at Hogwarts, locked up in his dungeon, away from the world. Angry, frightened, alone and miserable where he'll stay.
As for Bella, she was devastated when he left. But she has Marc and her aunts and uncles and gran, and her adopted daughter Luna. They'll be okay.
