Kara gently rested her head on Luther's shoulder as Alice leant onto her lap. They all stuck close as the bus left the terminal of Detroit, headed for the border.

Although they were glad to be on the bus safely and together, Kara knew that the challenges were not over yet.

Luther, sensing her stress, wrapped one arm protectively around Kara, pulling her closer. She looked up at him and smiled before leaning down to kiss Alice on the head.

Before they knew it, the bus was coming to a halt and they were being told to get off. Kara didn't let go of Alice's hand as they were escorted, Luther bravely leading the way.

"What's going on?" she whispered up to him, not wanting to attract attention to themselves.

"It's border control," he explained, "they're just going to check our ID."

Luther's words were reassuring to Kara as she trusted him with their lives.
They all got into the line waiting to be let through. Freedom was in sight.

A sudden high pitched humming noise caught Kara's attention. She looked to where the sound was coming from to see guards scanning everyone that wanted to cross the border.

"They're doing heat scans," Kara said, feeling deflated. They had gotten this far but now they would be caught.

"Kara," Luther held her hands in his, "When the time comes, I will sacrifice myself for you..."

"No." Kara was firm. She didn't want to lose him, not now.

"Please Kara. You have to protect Alice. She needs a Mother." He smiled weakly.

"And she wants a father too!" Tears started to form in Kara's eyes. They ran delicately down her cheek. Luther wiped them away with his thumb and kissed her on the forehead.

Kara grabbed his wrist weakly, trying to get his attention.
"I can't let you do that, Luther. I don't want you to leave us..."

The bigger android shook his head and knelt down next to Alice, pulling her in for a hug. He was worried that it might be his last chance to express his love to the girls.

"I don't want you to go, Luther." Alice began to cry, covering her face with her hands.

"Alice, please. Don't cry. I'll only do what I have to do."

The young Android frowned.
"What do you mean?"

"If something goes wrong, I'll make sure that you and mommy are safe."
He felt a pang of sadness. He had worked so hard for them to get here and now he would have to let them go on without him.

"There will be no sacrifices." Kara said this firmly, but on the inside she felt herself breaking. They had no plan on how to get through the border control.

"At least if they catch us... it'll be as a family." She pulled the other two androids in for a hug.

"Next please." The border guard gestured for them to come forward.

The three approached the booth.

"ID please?"

Kara fumbled in her pocket for the forged passports and placed them onto the desk with shaking hands.

The guard examined them closely before nodding and putting them back onto the desk. He picked up the heat sensor and pointed it at them.

Kara pulled them close, tears forming again.
"We just want to be free..."

They all closed their eyes, waiting to be turned in, but the humming noise didn't come.

Kara opened her eyes slowly. The guard was looking up towards the television displaying the news.

The story was of Marcus. He was leading an entirely peaceful protest with no casualties.

The border control guard looked at the heat scanner in his hand and shook his head.

"Welcome to Canada." He smiled, pushing the passports back to Kara.

"Th-thank you..."
Kara took the ID back and put her arm through Luther's. With his other arm, he gently guided Alice away.

Kara squeezed his arm in excitement.
"We did it..."

It felt like a dream. They had been aiming for this for so long, it was surreal.

Hand in hand, the trio stepped out of border control and into the snow. They had finally made it to Canada.

Kara looked down at Alice with tears of happiness in her eyes before kneeling down and hugging her. Luther knelt down too, hugging them both in his big arms.

"Are we going to be together forever?" The young Android asked her two guardians.

"Forever." Luther and Kara replied in unison and smiled at each other.
