The next day, Hugo went to Enchancia Castle to see Sofia. They were looking at the rose garden Sofia planted when Hugo was on vacation. But then Hugo sneezed and broke out in green spots.
"Bless you," Sofia said.
"Thanks," Hugo sniffled. But then he sneezed again.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Sofia asked.
"I was fine when I left Enchancia last night," Hugo sniffled. "Axel said it could be allergies, but I'm not sure what it is I'm allergic to exactly."
Amber, Hildegard, James, and Zandar showed up. They saw Hugo covered in green spots, and they had heard the conversation.
"Maybe you're allergic to roses," James surmised.
"I doubt it—he wasn't near any roses when he came yesterday," Sofia frowned.
"And there aren't any sunflowers or peach blossoms," Hugo declared. "Come to think of it, they don't even make me break out in green spots."
Then Hildegard let out a loud gasp and exclaimed, "Maybe you have a new allergy. Prince Hugo, you're allergic to Sofia!"
Everyone gasped at this hypothesis. Hugo and Sofia looked at each other in shock, but then they just started laughing themselves silly. Amber, James, and Zandar liked the joke, but Hildegard was serious.
"Yeah, right—like when I was allergic to Sofia!" Hugo snorted.
"And when I was allergic to Hugo!" Sofia cried.
"And let's not forget the time Sofia was allergic to me because you planted enchanted lilies on me!" Hugo recalled. He and Sofia continued laughing, but then he let out a big sneeze.
"Bless you," Sofia said.
"Thanks," Hugo sniffled. He blew his nose on a handkerchief.
"See?" Hildegard smirked. "I told you that you were allergic to Sofia."
Sofia and Hugo looked at each other, worried.
Later, Sofia and Hugo were in her room. They were thinking about what Hildegard said, but they didn't want to think this was true.
"Hildegard has made us allergic to each other before," Sofia pointed out.
"But you know, I started reacting this way when I came to see you yesterday," Hugo noted. "I don't get it—how can Hildegard's theory about me being allergic to you be true?"
"It can't be," Sofia declared. "You can't be allergic to me—that's just not possible."
"You're right, Sofie—there's no way I can be allergic to my best friend," Hugo smiled. But then he sneezed and broke out in spots.
"Bless you," Sofia said.
"Thanks," Hugo sniffled.
"But if you're not allergic to me, then why do you sneeze and break out in spots when you get near me?" Sofia frowned.
"I'm sure there's an explanation for this," Hugo sniffled.
Later, Hugo had gone home, and he lay down on his bed as he thought about his presumed allergy to Sofia. This worried him very much—he didn't want to be allergic to Sofia. Axel came in and saw his little brother looking worried.
"What's wrong, baby bro?" Axel asked, sitting on Hugo's bed.
"Ax, remember last night when you cracked that joke about me being allergic to Sofia?" Hugo asked nervously. "Well, Hildegard made a theory about that, and we realized that just might be true."
This worried Axel very much—he never meant for any of his jokes to be real. "What makes you think that?" he frowned. "If this is Hildegard's idea of trying to breaking you and Sofia up, she'll have to answer to me!"
"I don't think this is a plan," Hugo said. "To be honest, I only sneeze and break out in green spots when I'm near Sofia."
"Since when?" Axel asked.
"It all started yesterday when I went to see her after we came home," Hugo replied.
"Oh, no," Axel frowned. "Well, I'm sure it was something on Sofia that's making you sneeze."
"Well, if there were peach blossoms and sunflowers on her, that would explain my sneezes—but they don't make me break out in green spots," Hugo pointed out.
"Well, whatever it is, I'm sure you'll find that allergy," Axel assured his little brother.
"You're right," Hugo smiled. "I just hope this is only Hildegard's way of expressing her jealousy of my relationship with Sofia."
