The next day, Sofia was a little nervous about getting near Hugo. Hugo had come over to see Sofia—and this time, he was wearing a mask over his nose and mouth.
"Hugo, what's that mask for?" Sofia asked.
"Well, I don't see how this is going to help us figure out my allergy, but until we do, I may as well wear this mask to avoid a reaction," Hugo replied. "Have you been using a new brand of lotion?"
"I've been using the same lotion," Sofia replied. "I've heard it said that some people are allergic to the material in clothes or some certain gold, silver, or bronze."
"Do you really think I could be allergic to your ensemble?" Hugo asked.
"Only one way to find out," Sofia shrugged.
Sofia went off to change clothes. A few minutes later, she came back, wearing the pink and purple dress she wore for her 12th birthday, and she wasn't wearing a tiara. She stood near Hugo, who didn't feel a reaction when he took his mask off.
"Wow, I think it worked," Hugo smiled.
"Perfect," Sofia beamed.
But then Hugo let out a sneeze and broke out in green spots. "Or not," he groaned.
"Wow, it seems like you are allergic to me," Sofia frowned.
But Hugo wasn't ready to accept defeat just yet. "I wouldn't be so sure about that, Sofie," he said. "My dad says that allergies come and go, so I'm sure I'll get over it soon enough."
"I sure hope so," Sofia declared.
Throughout the day, Hugo was sure he'd get over his presumed allergy to Sofia. But whenever he got near her, he still sneezed and broke out in spots. Sofia and Hugo couldn't understand how this is happening.
"This can't be happening," Sofia fretted. "How can you be allergic to a person? We waited all day, and you still keep reacting to me like this."
"Dad did say that allergic take a while to disappear," Hugo sighed.
"But who knows how long it'll take for your allergy to stop?" Sofia asked.
"I wish I knew, but I guess I can't get anywhere near you without sneezing and breaking out—or wearing a mask," Hugo frowned. "I guess the only way we can talk is through our Enchantlets."
"But it's not the same as being with each other in person," Sofia pointed out.
"True," Hugo sighed. "I guess we know what this means."
"Drastic measures?" Sofia gulped.
"It sounds like it," Hugo sighed.
It was heartbreaking but true—Sofia and Hugo had officially broken up. They hugged tightly, trying to fight back their tears.
"It was fun while it lasted," Sofia said trying not to cry.
"Yes, it was," Hugo agreed. "I guess this is goodbye."
Sofia sadly watched as Hugo climbed into his coach and flew home. Sofia was so upset that she ran back to her room in tears.
A little later, Hugo made it home, and it wasn't easy telling his family about his and Sofia's breakup.
"Hugo, I'm so sorry," Garrick frowned.
"I don't know what to say," Axel said sadly.
"No one ever said that the hardest part of a relationship was putting a stop to it," Hugo sighed, trying not to cry. But he couldn't keep his tears back any longer.
Axel hugged his little brother tightly. "I wish there was something we could do to help," he sighed.
"Don't worry about me—I'll be fine," Hugo sobbed.
Meanwhile, Sofia was in her room, crying about her breakup with Hugo. It wasn't easy talking about it with her family.
"Honey, I'm so sorry," Roland frowned.
"Thanks, Dad," Sofia sobbed. "I never thought this day would come."
"Can we do anything to help?" Amber offered.
"I'll be fine," Sofia declined.
But Sofia and Hugo weren't fine. It had been a few days since they broke up, and they still haven't gotten over it.
