"Do you know who we are having a practice match with today?" I ask Sean as we wait for the bell to ring for the end of second period.
"Most probably Red knows but he won't say anything," he answers from the seat next to me. It's Monday and we're having our first practice match of the week. The team still doesn't know which school we'll be playing and I'm honestly just like the rest of them I'm curious to know.
"Oh well, I guess we'll find out later," I tell him as the bell rings. "And why are you even here? Don't you have business class right now?"
"Supply," he replies and that pretty much answers everything. It's just like when I skipped my calculus class last week when we had a supply and only went to mark myself present. "Besides, the teacher knows me and doesn't care if some of us join her class so long as we're not disturbing the rest of you all." Before I can say anything else the class is interrupted by a knock at the front door. The teacher doesn't even reach to open it as the door swings open and the secretary I met the first day walks inside. We momentarily watch her speak to the teacher before motioning a hand to someone in the hall.
"Class we're having a new addition to the school, this is Tia Lowe," she says introducing the girl who's standing next to her. At first glance you can tell she has a passion for the arts, what with her black jeans having paint splatters on them and carrying a sketchbook in her hand. "You can take the seat next to Anita and Sean, as much as l don't mind you visiting my class I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"Guess I'll have to see you at lunch," Sean says as he gets up from the seat next to me. I watch him walk out of class as my new classmate comes to where I am. She places her bag on the floor next to her chair, taking a pencil from her sweater and opens the sketchbook on her desk. I glance over and see a detailed sketch of a mountain landscape that she's shedding in and I have to admit it's impressive
"That's pretty cool," I comment. She looks up from her sketch, startled that I spoke to her.
"Thank you," she says brushing her curly hair back. "Anita right?"
"Nice to meet you Tia," I answer with a grin. "It's nice not to be the new kid in our grade anymore."
"You also moved here recently?" she questions and I nod my head. "So did you move from another school or did you move cities? I lived in Thunder Bay until my dad got a promotion and a transfer at his job and now we're here."
"Damn, that's really far away," I reply, surprised by how far out she was living. "And I transferred to this school."
"Yeah, it sucks I had to leave right before my final year in high school but my parents weren't comfortable leaving me on my own and we didn't have any family living near us up there so here I am," she says with a shrug of the shoulders.
