Touch Of Evil
05 - Side Lined

"No, I needed you to tell me about Jason's body,"

A clatter of plates and cutlery rings in Ryan's ears as he sets them down by the sink. After school was a busy time for Pops. So he always liked having more staff on so that they had even more waiters and waitresses to cover the overflow. Pop's even had hired a new waitress.

Ryan hadn't gotten much time to speak with her during the rush but he did manage to get a name. Hermione. Another raven-haired beauty but more of the womanly beautiful that teenager. "Ryan, could you help with the orders? Will needs to go on his break," Pop called into the kitchen from the counter.

"Sure I'll be right there," he called back snapping out of his daze. Normally Ryan's job was to wash up the dishes or help out the chief. But from time to time he was brought out from the back to the forefront. This wasn't something he was fond of happening often. Students from his high school enjoyed the fact the usually stubborn boy would have to do as they asked without being able to do much about it.

Fixing his paper hat Ryan walked out of the kitchen just as someone made their way in. Nearly knocking shoulders with each other the two stopped in their tracks "sorry," He quickly apologised. The new waitress shook her head giving him a sweet motherly smile something Ryan hadn't seen in a long time. "Its fine," she said slipping into the kitchen.

Pop's diner was designed and really felt like an old-school diner. Black and white tiled floors, comfortable red leather seats in the booths and the fact it had a jukebox. A fully functional jukebox. Casting his eye along the counter Ryan spots Veronica sitting down on one of the stools.

She hasn't noticed him yet and he wasn't sure that he wanted her to. With mix reports on her from what he heard around school but going by how they got along at the dance, she seemed nice enough. Swallowing what pride he had left as he carefully approached her.

"Hello, miss can I take your order?" Ryan put on a funny voice that way she wouldn't recognise him if she remembered him at all. Though it wasn't much different just in a higher pitch.

Whipping her head around to the sound of his voice her mouth replying before she even sees him. "No it's ok-" her eyes widen for a split second then a soft smile appears on her lips "Ryan? I didn't know you worked here," Veronica greeted him.

With a simple gesture to the white shirt and hat he was wearing "No I just like wearing the uniform," he smiled playfully at her and his lame attempt of a joke.

Veronica rolled her brown eyes at him matching an equally playful smile back at him "Very funny Mr Brooder," she teased.

Leaning forward he does a little bow "Thank you, you getting sorted alright?" He asked again double checking if she was alright.

Resting both hands on the countertop her eyes dart to the kitchen doors and back to him as she explained: "Yea my mum is getting me a chocolate milkshake."

Surprised Ryan blinked looking with a puzzled expression "Mum? Your mum works here?" He stupidly asked.

A tall glass filled with a chocolate milkshake with a striped straw pointing out of the top. "Here you go," Hermione spoke up announcing her presence. She smiled at her daughter before glancing towards Ryan.

"Thanks," Veronica thanked her as she played with the bottom of the glass spinning it so she could sip from the straw.

"Hermione is your mother?" Ryan glanced between the to females. It was pretty easy now that they stood side by side. The sunkissed skin, deep brown eyes and black hair they shared did help the resemblance.
