09 - Homewrecker
The Last Picture Show
" See you later Homewrecker, "
. . .
Ryan licked his dry lips tasting the tension in the air, it wasn't like him to feel uneasy while in Weatherbee's office. The faint creaking of the chair under him filled the empty silence of the room. Seated to his right was Richard who was just as familiar with the environment as his son. Ryan was almost envious of how relaxed his father during the situation.
But again he didn't know the full extent of it.
Your son being brought into the principal's office linked with sexual misconduct.
Feeling his throat tightening a little as many thoughts run through his mind. He really wished right now that he had convinced Betty to keep his name off the record.
It didn't take too long for Richard to pick up on Ryan's distress. So he carefully leant over and whispered in a playful manner "honestly, I'm just curious what's the new creative excuse why you've gotten yourself into trouble," he chuckled. Though he knew he was only trying to relax him Richard's joke had the exact opposite effect.
Ryan's fingers grip around the martial of his jeans "your guess is as good as mine," he mumbled.
The office door suddenly opened up interrupting the two talking with one another. Weatherbee stepped into the room. Ryan glanced over his shoulder to see that he had an issue of The Blue and Gold in his hands.
Shit.
"Mr Ryder, I assume you are wondering why I have called you here," he announced his presence. Like most times that Ryan had been here before Weatherbee, he was wearing the usual suit that he kept tidy. There was no signs of wear and tear even though at this point Ryan was sure he didn't have any other suits.
"I assume that it is due to Ryan being in trouble again, it isn't something new," Richard said simply shrugging. Compared to the older man standing in front of him Richard's clothing was caked in dirt and dust from his job. Ryan guessed he just came from Andrew's construction site when he got the call to come in.
Weatherbee's lips pursed into a tight line, the pages in his hands are passed over to Richard "this time I assure you it is quite different," he said with a cold edge to his words.
Settling into his office chair he stared at both the Ryder's waiting for either one to speak up. Ryan stayed silent while Richard's eyes ran over the words in front of him. He doesn't say anything for what feels like forever before his father opens his mouth.
"I- what? how is Ryan linked with this? how have you linked with this?!" the slam of his hand hitting the desk in front of him Richard's eyes darted from Weatherbee to Ryan. He wanted answers and he wanted them now.
"Dad- it's not what it looks like," Ryan winced slightly as his father's reaction but tried to calm him down.
Unlike Ryan who seemed somewhat worried by his father's outburst, Weatherbee simply rests his elbows on his desk. Meeting the other Ryder's gaze he calmly speaks "Ryan has been linked to this book that the football players have been used to record girls as conquests."
"I didn't see them as conquests, it isn't like that."
Richard took a long breath, closing his eyes he tried to collect his thoughts "then why is he being treated like he has done something wrong?"
"Because he knew what was going on and didn't report it," Weatherbee explained. But when his lips part to explain further the creaking of the office door catches everyone's attention. No one was explaining anyone else to join them or at least Ryan wasn't.
