"welcome back to paradise, miss brown" just when i thought i had escaped this guy. i rolled my eyes at him and sat up. "so, i saw that those little demons informed you on your situation." he tapped his pen to his clipboard.
"what, were you watching me or something?" i swear this guy always had something up his sleeve.
"i couldn't help but watch you. everyone over there wants to have you. they're greedy and mischievous. i couldn't risk losing someone who might be of some use to me" he sounded like a parent when he said stuff like that. maybe he was when he was alive. if he was ever alive. come to think of it, i don't know a single thing about this guy.
"that's probably the closest thing to a compliment you've ever said. i'm proud" i said jokingly as i crossed my arms and raised my brow at him. he scoffed and turned his head.
his face hardened for a moment, he looked back at me. he took a deep breath and started "ok let's cut to the chase. so, here's the deal, when half breeds like you come in, you are usually first evaluated by the memories you made when you were alive. it's hard for most like you but i guess we'll just have to see." he clicked his pen.
"i-i don't think you wanna go in there" i said nervously as i pointed to my head. i had locked so many things away in that fortress. the things i had tried to hard to forgot are still there. somewhere.
"i'm not looking forward to it ether but, i don't make the rules" he shrugged his shoulders as he planted his feet on the group and stepped towards me. he lifted his hands and placed his fingers on his temples , he felt so cold. he shut his eyes.
"tell me what you see"
finn's pov
an image appeared in my head. a young girl, probably about 5 or 6, sitting in a play ground. the light out was dim, it was cloudy that day. i assumed the girl was millie, i mean, she looked just like her. dusty brown hair, crooked smile. it was definitely her. she was playing in the sand box, totally alone. not a soul around. no voices, no nothing. just her. the swings squeaked as the wind blew furiously. a storm must have been brewing that day.
her short hair blew in her face, she grabbed a pink pale and dumped out all the sand inside of it before placing it on her head to create some kind of wind shield. now isn't that just adorable. she giggled and continued to dig. she appeared to be making a sand castle. i continue to watchful this was quite entertaining.
she stands up suddenly, dropping her shovel and mold. her smile widened as she ran towards someone, or something. she wrapped her small arms around the leg of a women. she was slender and pale, much like millie. they bored the same hazel eyes. it must have been her mother. but, why was this memory so important? i'm sure there were many more with her mother in them. she seemed to be very dear to her.
a jump in her memories occur. i now she her in a bedroom. it's small and cramped. she looks to be about 9 or 10 now. she's sitting on a wire-framed bed, staring off into space. i see that women again, she's arguing with a man.
"you have brought nothing but pain to this family! i couldn't be happier that you're leaving!"the women yelled violently at the man as she grinded her teeth. the man looked completely enraged. his eyes grew devilish as he striked the women and brought her to the floor. he kept on hitting and hitting. she tried to fight back, her legs flailed in the air. he was on top of her now, holding her neck as he stared into her eyes. i can't believe what i'm seeing.
i look back to see millie, crying. she's so young. i felt terribly that she had to witness such a thing. the sadness in her eyes soon turned to rage, she ran towards the man.
"stop it! you're hurting mommy!" she screamed as she tried to get to her, but, it was no use. the man simply picked her up and threw her to the wall.
"out of my way you dumb kid." he said angrily.
she coughed for a moment and crawled to a phone that sat on the floor. she dialed 911 almost immediately. she was on the phone for a moment as she told them there address, her voice shaking.
the man noticed what she had done before the police showed up. he dropped the women, grabbed a suit case he had packed previously and ran out the door. he climbed into a car and turned the key to start the ignition. it was over quicker then it had started. he got away.
but, millie's mother laid there, bleeding on the floor. she chest rose and fell slowly. her pulse was slowly fading.
millie took her hand and held it in hers. she whispered a prayer into there hands as she shut her eyes tightly.
"it's ok mommy," she wiped her nose with her jacket sleeve as the tears flowed from her innocent eyes. "you're gonna be ok, i promise. i called the hospital and th-they're gonna fix you all up."
her mother stroked her face. "oh millie," she managed to say before coughing up some blood onto her other hand. she wiped it off the back of her hand and onto the floor. "i love you, so much. i want you to remember that." she placed something in millie's hand, a necklace. it was of a feather, a single, silver feather. "when ever you're sad, i want you to hold this charm in your hand and know that your mother is with you, ok?"
"i will mommy i promise," her shaken voice said as she placed it around her neck.
"thank you millie." she said, her eyes flickering. her body looked so weak.
"for what?" millie asked her as she leaned in to hear her better.
"for giving me the best life i could have possibly asked for" she smiled at her and kissed her hand. the tears in her eyes were pure and true. a mark of utter sorrow. "goodbye , my love" she whispered to her. her breath stopping at the sound. millie's eyes widened. her mother's closed. her lower lip quivered, she bit down on her lip as she hugged her mother's lifeless body.
"mommy please! don't leave me here all alone!" tears rolled down her cheeks and onto her clothes. "please mommy, please. i-i can't do this without you" she buried her head into her stomach as she weeped "please."
i removed my hands from millie's head almost immediately. my breathe was fast and hard. my eyes were widen with almost a feeling of terror. a tear dripped off my chin. it had been years since i have cried. her memories really got to me.
"what?" millie said as she looked at me. when i saw her, i saw that sad little girl who had lost the one thing she loved the most. i bit down on my lower lip, i don't think i've ever been at such a loss for words. i came closer to her and wrapped her in my arms, burying my head into her shoulder.
"m-millie im sorry, im so sorry" i weeped as i sniffled. no ones memories have ever effected me like this. i just held her in my arms. something from that story made me want to protect her. i never wanted to see her in that state ever again. i wouldn't let it happen.
and anyone who tried to hurt her would have to
go through me.
