Chapter 4 || "Common Knowledge"

When I wake up and check the forecast the next morning, I'm thrilled to see that it's only in the 50's. While some shy away and moan at the idea of colder days to come, I've always found myself fond of the crisp autumn mornings and afternoons, feeling the warmth of the sun shining down on you, and chilly evenings as the sun sets. It's an excuse to break out jean jackets, sweaters, and leggings; my favorite staples of clothing.

I shower and get changed, grabbing my bag for class and heading out the door. I pull out my phone to text Nicole, quickly sending her a message.

H: hey is xav walking you to class today?

N: yeah he is

H: great i'll walk with you guys

I head down the hallway and towards the elevators, pressing the button to call it to my floor. When it opens, a few people file out into the hallway, leaving just three other girls inside. I step in and hit the button for the lobby, the doors closing. I stand there for a minute, looking at the wall, when I feel a pair of eyes on me. I turn my head, only to be met with Sebastian's twin Cara staring back at me.

"Are you Helaina?" she asks me, clearly not turned off by the fact that I just caught her staring at me.

"Um, yeah. You're Sebastian's twin." I say awkwardly, unsure of what her intentions are right now.

"Oh good, I knew you looked familiar; I just didn't know how."

Hmm, I don't know. Maybe it's from that time a month ago when I caught Shawn Mendes come stumbling out of your room with hickies draped all up and down his neck and you caught an attitude with me. I don't know, just a hunch.

"I guess you heard about me and Sebastian, then." I sigh.

"Yeah, but not from him directly. We might be twins but that still doesn't mean he tells me shit." she rolls her eyes.

"Wait, then how did you know anything about us? I didn't even tell my best friend until yesterday when Sebastian practically forced me to."

The elevator comes to a stop at the lobby. Cara steps out and I follow after her.

"It wasn't exactly a secret." she laughs, but when I don't join in, she stops. Cara clears her throat. "Wait, it wasn't a secret, right?"

"Yeah, kind of. I had just gotten out of a relationship and we both agreed that we weren't looking for anything that serious, so we said we wouldn't mention it to anyone." I say.

"Well, that's not how he made it sound. I hate to have to be the one to tell you this, especially since I barely even know you, but Seb didn't exactly keep whatever's going on between you two a secret. He's told basically the entire frat house and his entire friend group, which is how I found out from Seb and I's mutual friends Piper and Dylan and Allia."

Piper. The one who always had a fascination for making me do stupid shit at the frat parties. I knew I never liked her.

"Anyway, sorry to tell you all of this, but I have to go. Hopefully this helped." Cara walks away, rushing towards the doors to head for whatever she's almost late for. My phone buzzing in my pocket is the only thing that snaps me out of it.

N: hey where are you? Xavier and I are outside your building but we don't see you

H: sorry i'll be out in a second

As I head for the doors, I spot Nicole and Xavier standing outside. I push open the doors and they both look over at me, whatever conversation they were having now coming to a halt. Nicole waves and they make their way over.
