Shawn comes back nearly ten minutes later, Sophie for some reason in tow. He doesn't sit down, instead staring at me.
"Can you move over Helaina? I invited Sophie to sit with us." he says. I grit my teeth together, moving over silently. Caleb watches our exchange, intrigued by whatever little show we're putting on for him until it's time to finally watch Julia.
"What's going on?" Caleb whispers to me as I'm forced to move closer towards him. I just shrug, not wanting to get into it.
"Oh Caleb, this is Sophie. I met her in line at he concession stand." Shawn says, introducing her. She smiles at Caleb, who just nods in return.
"Hi," Sophie says.
"Hi," Caleb replies, it being obvious that he couldn't care less who she is or why she's here right now.
"You know what, I'm going to go find somewhere else to sit." I mumble, standing up again. I begin to pass around Caleb, who wordlessly stands up and follows me. I sit down on the opposite end of the bleachers, plopping myself down. Caleb surprisingly sits down next to me. "Why'd you follow me?"
"Shawn's being a dick." he replies simply. He takes another fry off my plate, chewing slowly as he stares out at the track.
"Yeah, but you didn't have to do that. Aren't you guys friends?"
He shrugs.
"I guess, but that doesn't mean I don't call people out on their bullshit just because we're friends." he says, and I smile. I like that.
"Why is he even doing all of this? Like, why would he possibly want to show up to the meet today? Him and Julia pretty much hate each other at this point." I point out. I take a cheese fry for myself.
"You know why." he says, his voice neutral but a smug grin creeping up on his lips.
"No, I don't think I do." It's kind of a lie, but at the same time, it isn't. I mean, sure I can suspect why Shawn's doing it, but that's all it is; a suspicion.
"Oh come on, Helaina. You clearly know that Shawn still likes you. He's pulling some shit Julia would do and is trying to make you jealous. Judging by your reaction, I guess it's working." He eyes me.
"Shut up." I laugh. "I guess that's one of the reasons why Shawn and Julia don't get along. They're so similar that they hate it and don't even realize it."
"Probably." he laughs, agreeing with me.
"I'm sorry to interrupt," a woman who looks to be in her 60's says, turning around. She smiles lightly at us. "but I just wanted to say that you two make a very cute couple."
"Oh no, we're not-"
"Thank you." Caleb says loudly over me, cancelling my response out. The woman nods and smiles wider, turning back around.
I wait a few seconds before turning to Caleb and asking, "Why did you just say that? Why didn't you let me correct her?"
"Who cares?" he asks. "It's easier to just say thank you and for the conversation to end, rather than sit here and explain to some stranger that my girlfriend is about to run in the next event and your boyfriend who's not your boyfriend is over there flirting with some girl and your boy toy Sebastian is back at campus, probably hooking up with a sorority girl as we speak."
"Wait, what? You really think Sebastian's doing that?" I ask, sitting up straight.
"Think? I know." he laughs, but I can tell it's out of nerves and not to be rude. Still, I swallow hard.
"How do you know?"
"Sebastian and I have been friends since we both pledged and joined the fraternity last year during rush week." he says. That's right, I completely forgot that they were best friends. "I hate to tell you, but you and Sebastian were never exclusive- at least not to him. The whole time you guys were hooking up, he was hitting up other girls at the same time."
