CHAPTER FOURTEEN:
Life without Darren was different. My first months of college were primarily spent with him so it was strange being without him. I felt alone. And things between Darren and I did not end on a good note. After that phone call, we hadn’t spoken in weeks. I desperately wanted to call him and make things right, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. What he had said really got to me. “I didn’t leave you, I was never with you.” He was so condescending. He acted as if I had thought that were together, hopelessly pining after him like some little girl. That’s why I couldn’t call him. But still, that didn’t stop me from checking my phone everyday, hoping for a text from him to pop up on the screen. I was so oblivious to my surroundings that I didn’t realize that I almost knocked over Brian.
“Watch where you’re going, Belvore!” he complained.
“Deal with it Holden!” I said jokingly, shoving him a little harder. Brian and I have an interesting relationship. We have had to work together pretty closely the last month, considering he plays my vagina in a play. But Brian I don’t exactly get along. We both have very strong opinions and are extremely stubborn. You could say we have, conflicting personalities. And I wouldn’t say that we dislike each other, not at all, Brian’s become one of my dearest friends. We just thoroughly enjoy getting under each other’s skin.
“Were you too busy choosing which guy to grind to watch where you were going?” Brian said, he thinks I’m a slut after the ecstasy incident.
“Well at least I have choices,” I snap, “And no I was paying attention, its just that I see right over your head when looking straight.”
“And now you’re spreading rumors about me being short! Well, at least you’re spreading something other then your legs.”
Damn, I couldn’t think of a comeback. I was quick, but Brian was king of instant insults.
“Just shut it Holden,” I retort,
“Are you always an idiot, or just when I’m around?”
And with that I grab the book Brian’s reading, through it into a nearby hedge, snickering,
“See you around Bri!”
“Don’t call me Bri!”
“By Bri”
“Bee-itch,” he says smiling.
I have lunch with the girls. Yeah, I’m still the new girl, but its so easy being with the Starkids that it doesn’t feel like it anymore.
“I saw your boyfriend on the way here,” I say to Meredith, “Remind me again, why do you like him?”
Meredith blushes, ‘Brian’s not… he’s not my boyfriend.”
Brian is pretty much her boyfriend. They never admit that they are together to us, and I don’t know if they have even talked about it with each other, but its clear that they are together. They are weirdly perfect for each other. I can see the way their eyes light up when they look at each other. And they spend nearly every waking moment together; I don’t think Meredith has slept in her own house in weeks.
“Oh yeah?” asks Lauren, “Then what is he?
“He’s just a friend,” Meredith says not at all convincingly and we all roll our eyes, “Well what about you Lauren!” she says purposely changing subject, “Tell us about your love life. You’re a little dish; things can’t be as uninteresting as you say they are.”
Lauren keeps her love life on lockdown. She is the best at keeping secrets out of all of us.
“It really is uninteresting!” she demands.
“Hmm I’m not so sure about that,” says Jaime, “I saw you walking out of the guy’s house, looking pretty disgruntled, care to comment?”
“Please, those guys? I was probably just talking to them. You all always assume the worst! And what about Andy!” Lauren says quickly putting me in the hot seat.
“What about me?”
“Well you are totally hot, who are you interested in?” jokes Meredith.
“Well no one really,” I say. But voices in my head are screaming DARREN, DARREN, DARREN.
“Well I think I know someone interested in you,” says Jaime
“Who?”
“I overheard Walker talking. In his words you’re ‘banging and totally smokin’”
“Really?”
“Yup. Heard it with my own ears. What do you think?”
“Yeah c’mon,” Meredith adds, “You guys have spent so much time together, with you teaching him all the Dick choreography, there has to have been some sparks.”
“Yeah and Joe is sexy! He has the best body out of all the Starkid guys,” Lauren says nudging me under the table. In a way that only she and I would understand, she had said that Joe was better then Darren. She wanted me to forget about Darren. And I wanted to forget him too. Or at least get back at him.
