A/N: I'm sorry for being away for so long. I just needed to take some time away for myself. I've just been busy with work and just life in general. I'm debating whether I should write shorter chapters since that's easier on me. What do you guys think?
The moment you smelt the acrid stench, your mind was filled with confusion. Tsuchi spoke gravely, "If this scent is part of my suspicion; then it seems like that tengu leader must be behind this ordeal." You knew they were behind this. However, was there a potential risk? There was more to this stench than you knew. This scent was the symbol of the start of not only a mental battle, but one of psychological meaning to the bearers of both light and darkness.
Elsewhere, Bastion's anxiety was eating his thoughts alive. He couldn't help but think of the negativity inside his head. Nothing made him feel worse than imagining you collapsing again. This fight was only draining everyone more mentally than physically. Bastion didn't want to be a sitting duck. He wanted....no, he needed to help you at any cost. The more he thought about it, the stronger his desire grew.
You couldn't take it anymore. You were sick of being told to rest when you weren't actually ill. You knew that your health would come before your desire to help those you care for. You despised the fact that your mere thoughts were rejected by outward comments made by others around you. Your inward thoughts only brought a desire to fight your own mentality. You knew what you had to say to yourself.
You ran as fast as you could to the academy. The acrid stench only got stronger as you got closer to the academy. The only sound you could hear was the constant chatter surrounding you. It honestly killed you inside. The constant struggle of not wanting to lose yourself to your own doubts. The faster you ran, the farther the academy felt from your reach.
Bastion was worried when you didn't answer his texts. The last text he read was:
Angel ❤️
Going to be late for class. Miss Fontaine needed my help with something.
That text was from earlier in the morning. It was almost late afternoon and his worry only grew. He couldn't stop thinking of all the worst case scenarios spinning inside of his head. He refused to listen to them. He refused to accept that someone or something was trying to hurt you with mental daggers. What scared Bastion the most was the possibility that it had already happened.
When you had reached the academy, you were coughing from the constant onyx haze that surrounded your sight. This sight made you shiver.
This onyx haze made you want to freeze in fear. Those who choose the darkness over light will only grow smaller in their sight to find a way out of the mental prison they are trapped in.
Though you had chosen to be alone, there was much more to the situation than anyone else knew. The sight of the onyx haze was one you did not expect. "Help me...help me." Izanami queried, "Where is all of this coming from, aijin? Are the tengu behind this?" You shrug, "I'm not really sure but, I have a feeling they're trying to lure us into a trap." When you had spoken those words, all the Kami spirits went quiet.
Meanwhile, Bastion and Jesse had been in a panic. It had been more than two hours and they had not been able to trace you. Bastion expressed his worry to the bluenette, "I hope that Y/N is okay. You know how stubborn she can be, right? I just hope she hasn't gotten herself into the enemy's hands again." Jesse acknowledged Bastion's worry with a mere nod, "Y'know my sister. She may seem cold but we both know she only wants what's best. I love her but she still shuts me out. Ya aren't doin' a bad thing by asking her to let out some of that concern." Bastion concedes silently with Jesse. Though he knew what Bastion was thinking, Jesse knew there was something off about his response.
The iniquity. The sanity of the mind. It was those two factors that Kuro determined would be the downfall of the human race. His past was plain yet the eyes of the woman he saw one day undeniably burned into his already fragile mind. The ancient demon's orbs were set on the mental destruction he wished to create. His heart was nonexistent. However, his cursed mindset was as dominant as it ever was.
Mei-Rin could sense that someone was near. Though at five years of age, she and Noriko left Yuko's shrine. Mei-Rin did not like the idea of a vengeful spirit seeking its revival of their ancient past. It was more of her fear of losing her own path that made Mei-Rin quake in sorrow. Her heart is described to be a steel barrier according to Noriko herself. Mei-Rin feared that you (one of her closest friends) might not survive to see the next moon. She vowed that she would not let you down. She did not want a repeat of the rational despair she went through several years ago.
Noriko cursed at herself. She may have seemed to be the wise one, but her own sense of belonging was being questioned. Before she met you and Mei-Rin, she was lost. Noriko left with Mei-Rin after hearing of Yuko's disappearance all that time ago. She hadn't heard from you which worried her greatly. She didn't know who her parents were and she had been searching for answers since then. Fortunately, Mei-Rin had been kind enough to help her through her heart wrenching ordeal. Noriko shook her head as she saw her phone suddenly light up. When she spoke up, Noriko's phone fell to the ground.
You had decided to take a walk alone. You could have asked someone to come with you, but you felt that you needed some time to yourself. Tama had requested to come with you. She asked, "Y/N-san, are you sure you are okay?" You grumble, "I'm not a child. I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself." You inhale the scent of the sea as you walk near the docks. You couldn't help but think of what had happened over the past week. Your eyes gaze up at the now darkened skies. The moon was hidden beneath the onyx clouds that linger within the night. You genuinely missed this view. It had always eased your mind of the anxieties that linger within you. The only thing on your mind now was the hunt for the enemy.
Later that evening, you returned to your dorm. As you felt yourself drift off, a sudden crash caused you to fall out of your bed. You groan in annoyance, "What in the name of Ra is going on?" You look out the window and become puzzled at the sight before you. You utter out, "Bastion?"
