Chapter 26

Me, Riley and Avery are hanging out at Topanga's today. I was going to tell Riley about moving today but I decided not to. Avery is sitting on my lap sleeping. She didn't get much sleep last night. She was up all night and couldn't fall asleep. I had her just play quietly on my bed while I tried to sleep but I couldn't knowing she was up. My mom is also here working and Topanga is here. It was really just us. People were stopping in to get there morning coffee but then leaving.

Me and Riley were sitting and talking when the entire bakery went quiet. Mainly it was just my mom and Topanga who stopped talking. Me and Riley look behind us and saw who it was.

"Hi Maya" He says.

"Hi dad" I say. Avery starts to stir.

"Hi Katy" He says to my mom.

"Hi Kermit" She says back.

"I heard you got remarried. Congrats" He says to her.

"Thank you" She says.

"Is she yours?" He asks my mom referring to the sleeping baby.

"No. She's mine. Her name is Avery" I say.

He turns back towards me.

"Oh" He says. He was kinda shocked. "Well she is beautiful" He adds.

"Why are you here?" I ask and stand up. I was struggling to hold her. She is getting so big and I'm really small.

"I heard you are moving" He says.

"Maya what is he talking about" Riley asks. I kinda ignored her.

"I am" I say to him. "How do you know?" I ask.

"Your gonna be my next door neighbor" He says.

"Maya" Riley says. Again, I ignore her

"I just want to let you know. I'm giving you the option of not talking to me when you move and I won't try to talk to you if you don't want me to" He says.

"Thanks dad" I say. I want to think through my decision before I say anything.

"Before you move in I just want you to know I have a wife" He says.

"I know" I say.

"I also have two kids with her. So you have two half siblings. I have a 6 year old girl and another little girl probably around the same age as her" He says motioning to Avery. "How old is she? Like two" He asks.

"Yes. Just turned two" I say. I don't like that he knows about her.

"Ok. Maybe I'll see you around. Bye Maya" He says.

"Bye dad" I say and he leaves.

Avery wakes up as he is walking out. "Shawn is your daddy" Avery says.

"He is baby" I say.

I turn around and look at Riley. She was crying. I went and sat next to her. Avery sat in my lap and laid her head on my chest.

"How could you not tell me?" She asks while choking on her tears. "How does your deadbeat dad know you are moving before your best friend" She says. "You can't leave me" She says. "I already missed enough of your life and Avery's life" She says. I felt to bad.

"I know Honey. I wanted to tell you but I wanted to make sure you were ready" I say.

"I will never be ready to hear my best friend is leaving" She says. "Where are you moving to?" She asks.

"Me, Lucas and Avery are going upstate near Shawn's house" I say.

"Why is Lucas going? You two aren't even dating" She says. It takes her a minute to figure it out. "You didn't tell me about that either" She says and cries a little more.

Topanga and my mom were standing at the counter watching us. Avery was sitting on my lap watching.

"I'm sorry Riley" I say. She just shrugs her shoulders. I give her a really tight hug. She cries a little more. Poor Avery was crushed in the middle of it. We let go from the hug.

"When are you moving?" She asks.

"I don't know anymore. I'm gonna have Lucas find a new house. I don't want to live next to my dad" I say.

"I want to live next to Shawn" Avery says.

"This is a different dad" I tell her. She doesn't get it.

We both stand up. I put Avery on my hip.

"Your moving too aren't you?" Riley asks my mom.

"I am. I'm moving in with Shawn" She says.

"I was expecting that. You two are married" Riley says. "Can we go to the bay window?" She asks me with a small smile.

"Of course" I say.

We say goodbye to our moms and then me, Avery and Riley go to the Matthew's apartment. On the way there I call Lucas.

"Hi Maya" He says when he picks up.

"Hey babe" I say.

"Is everything alright? You never call me unless something is wrong" Lucas says. You could hear the concern in his voice.

"Kinda. I'm walking with Avery and Riley right now" I say and Avery cuts me off.

"Hi daddy" Avery yells into the phone as I was holding her. She can't walk the entire way to Riley's house.

"Hi baby" Lucas says back. Avery giggles.

"So I had a visitor today" I say.

"Who?" He asks.

"My dad came to Topanga's. It's turns out he is going to be our next door neighbor at the new house" I say.

"That wasn't your daddy. Shawn is your daddy" Avery says.

"I know sweetie" I say to Avery.

"You want a new house, don't you?" Lucas asks.

"I do" I say.

"I'll call he realtor tomorrow and find out what we can do" Lucas says.

"Ok. Thank you" I say.

"I'll talk to you later" He says.

"Bye" I say and hang up.

"What did he say?" Riley asks.

"He's gonna call tomorrow and get a new house" I say.

"Farther or closer to Shawn?" Riley asks.

"Probably farther. It was about a fifteen minute car ride from the house we were going to buy to Shawn's house." I say.

"That's nice" Riley says.

We get to Riley's apartment and go into her room. No one was home. Auggie and Cory went somewhere today together.

Avery sits on the floor and played with the few toys she has at Riley's house.

"I'm sorry Riley. I didn't want you to find out like that. I wanted it to be just you and me in a private place. No Avery, no one else" I say.

"It's ok but when will you come see me?" She asks.

"All the time. My mom wants to keep the apartment so whenever we are here we have somewhere to stay and since we have somewhere to stay we will probably be here a lot. Plus Lucas's parents are down here. They want to see there son and granddaughter" I say

"Ok. You better bring here her all the time" She says.

"I will" I say.

So we sat and talked for a little while. I started getting a flood of messages from Lucas sending me houses for sale. I went home to look through those. Me and Avery looked and we found one we really liked. It's about forty five minutes away from Shawn's house and a hour away from my dad. We are going to take a little road trip to go see it next week. We want to be 100 percent sure before we put a offer down. The other house we just saw pictures of and decided we liked it and put the offer in. Then we didn't end up liking it because of the neighbors.
