Chapter Two

Alex glided through his first class barely paying attention to CD player playing a recording of Romeo and Juliet. It wasn’t like he could follow along in his book anyway. He spent some of his time whispering to Angela, who was quickly becoming his best friend at this school. But he suspected she had a crush on him. Unfortunately, he was most definitely not interested in her. Or any hers, to be perfectly honest.

Angela walked him to Biology 2, despite his protests, and gave a cutesy giggle before leaving him alone in the doorway. He exhaled and counted his steps to his desk before dropping into it, setting his books on the desktop. He took a few breathes of courage to prepare himself for another interaction with Casey, when he heard the scrape of metal against the floor. And he was no longer alone.

“Sorry about yesterday,” Alex apologized, turning to face his neighbor.

“What are you talking about?” Casey asked perplexed. He had thought his first meeting with the blonde boy had gone okay.

“How I sat with Angela instead of you,” Alex offered.

Casey recalled feeling slightly disappointed. “It’s okay. I know I’m not the only one that talked to you yesterday, it was just an offer.”

“Does that offer still stand?” Alex sputtered nervously. All though he had no idea why he was so nervous nor why it took so much courage to talk to his neighbor.

“Yeah, but are you sure you don’t want to sit with your bff Angela?”

Alex paused for a beat, thinking. “I can alternate, can’t I?”

Casey’s smirk was lost on Alex’s sightless eyes. “Sure. Yeah, the offer still stands.”

Alex smiled, uneasily. “Okay, I’ll have to break the news to Ange first.”

“Why don’t you text her.. ahw,” Casey said realizing he had put his foot in his mouth there. How would Alex be able to text? It's not like they had braille cell phones. Well as far as he knew that didn't.

Alex gave an uncomfortable laugh. He didn’t really understand his extreme unease around Casey today. Sure they had both took turns stepping on each other’s toes, but that didn’t cause for the feelings Alex had.

“Boys,” Mr. Johnson warned from his desk.

The two remained quiet for the rest of the period, each thinking to themselves and not really paying attention to the rest of the Mitosis video. Alex was pondering what had cause his unease, while Casey was wondering what they were having for lunch today.

Finally the bell rang and Alex stood up warily, hearing the scrape of Casey’s chair. Casey immediately took a few steps forward and grunted when he realized Alex wasn’t following behind him. He turned around and tugged on Alex’s arm. “C’mon we’re going to be late for lunch.”

Alex flinched away from Casey’s touch. He didn’t mean to, it was just that Casey’s hands were so cold, and it sent an electric shock through Alex’s body. He didn’t understand it, but it seemed to relax his feelings of unease. He felt like he could breathe again.

“Sorry maybe I should have warned you or something,” Casey muttered.

“No, it’s just that I wasn’t prepared for it.”

“Alright, note to self don’t touch the new kid. Got it. Now come on,” he said turning and taking a few steps.

Alex laughed at Casey’s antics and followed behind him, shaking his head at his odd feelings from earlier. The two walked down the hall in silence until they entered the cafeteria. Casey instructed Alex to sit at his table, after he told Angela he wasn’t sitting with her, and promised to get their lunches.
