Looking to each of these corpses wariness wells up in Ye Gui Feng's heart. There is something vastly different about these corpses from all the others that he had stolen cultivation essence from.
"** *** *** ***** *** *** ****** **** ******* ***** ** *** *** ******** *** **** ******."
As Ye Gui Feng backs away with an expression of caution Xuan Nuo rises to a stand and straightens his back.
[...]
Constricting his eyes Ye Gui Feng looks to Xuan Nuo with a greater sense of wariness than before.
The air given off by Xuan Nuo right now is a lot tenser than before. This kind of air is something that is typically seen on the body of a powerful commander who is generally responsible for leading an army of a million soldiers into battle.
[...Am I supposed to feel honored about this situation?]
Although Ye Gui Feng didn't fully comprehend the meaning of Xuan Nuo's words he got the generally idea of them expecting him to continuously grow stronger in the midst of this battle.
Having been raised as a nomadic hunter during his childhood Xuan Nuo's instincts are far above the average masses and his expectation of Ye Gui Feng isn't far from the truth.
Although Ye Gui Feng isn't capable of defeating Xuan Nuo right now that's not to say that he isn't capable of this feat as the battle drags on.
The longer this battle drags on for the stronger Ye Gui Feng would become due to the assimilations of the seed of insight that he had absorbed in the midst of his ascension.
Prior to being a warrior Xuan Nuo is the subordinate of the Asura Monarch. The order of his master is something that he would have to place above his own pride for that is what it means to enter into a pact with an Original Monarch.
If this battle with Ye Gui Feng is a personal one Xuan Nuo wouldn't mind suffering defeat in a one to one fight, but this battle is something that the Asura Monarch has commanded of him hence he must emerge victorious regardless of the means that he must deploy; even if these means are something that he would see as unfair against his opponent.
[...]
A faint smile appears on Ye Gui Feng's face. Though this battle may become tougher on him he felt a sense of accomplishment in receiving the acknowledgement of a powerful adversary.
[Hm?]
Seeing the limbs of these corpses twitching the wariness in Ye Gui Feng's heart rises as he backs away further.
Each of these corpses reaches their wrinkled arms out and grabs onto the spike that is piercing out of their chest or abdomen as they start to pull themselves off it.
This entire sight is rather surreal to Ye Gui Feng but having worked with Jiangshis in the distant past he didn't feel any discomfort from the scene in front of him.
Just as these corpses are a few inches away from prying themselves off the dark spike they raised their heads and directed their burning red eyes towards Ye Gui Feng.
The stares of these corpses can only be described as eerie.
As someone who cultivates in wills and intents Ye Gui Feng can tell that these corpses still contain something that is similar to a "conscience."
From a single glance one might consider this conscience to be artificial but to Ye Gui Feng this conscience is something that he would consider to be similar to a genuine soul.
