Thunk.
Thunk.
The wheelchair bumped along, as his head bobbed up and down on the headrest.
Every time we went over a rough patching of floor he moaned in his sleep, and shifted positions.
I wish I could tell him to wake up, but I had been given strict instructions to not disturb him.
The floor had cracks in it where saplings started to shoot through, and try to grow in the hospital corridor, causing the hallways to be uneven and bumpy.
It seemed more and more saplings appeared every day, but I had no time to worry about this.
I turned at the corner of the hallway, and stepped into patient room 45ab.
There was already a nurse waiting there for me.
"Thank you Cecilia, for bringing him here." She said.
"It seems the other room he was in had issues, regarding the, uh, well you know."
She gestured out into the hallway.
The saplings. I thought.
They must have grown into his old room in the middle of the night.
"Um, can I, stay, with him a bit?" I stuttered.
"Sure." The nurse responded.
She turned on her heels and left the room without another word.
I walked over to the bed that the nurse had laid him in.
I dropped down on my knees, and lightly touched his arm.
A shock ran through my body, electrocuting my veins and supercharging my brain.
I gasped and drew away from his arm as the feeling escalated.
I sat back into the floor as I panted, the experience had left me exhausted.
I turned my head back towards him.
He moaned in his sleep, then shot bolt upright in the hospital bed.
He looked directly at me, a puzzled look on his face.
"Who are you, and where am I?"
His words got louder and louder as he spoke, raising to a shout.
"I, I have to go."
I said, as I stood up and ran out the room.
He shouted behind me and I shut the door, and turned the lock.
He ran up and began banging in the door, but no luck, I had actually just locked a patient into a hospital room.
I swiftly moved down the hall, tying back my silvery white hair into a bun as I went.
I turned another corner and walked up a spiral flight of stairs, emerging into the cool dark morning air, as I tried to process what I had just done.
