song: settle down by the 1975
we pulled up to the mills house, which was humongous. her parents owned a couple of clothing businesses across the country and they were pretty rich. she has party's here almost every weekend. i've only been to a couple, mostly cause the boys were going or viv wanted to meet boys. the first time i ever went to a party of ambers was freshman year. she was a freshman as well but, was already on top of the school. all the seniors came and most of the guys wanted to hook up with her. the boys had convinced me to try it out, since it was our first party, and i caved. we were there for 30 minutes max and amber saw ethan and walked over and struck up a conversation. by the end of the night they were practically dating, of course she stuck her tongue down his throat a couple times.
"syd?" grayson whispered out of no where, causing me to leave my thoughts.
"what?" i asked regaining my focus.
"uh, we here." he smiled, almost shrugged. i nodded and followed him out of the car. i looked up to see my mom and dad already at the front door, ethan not too far behind them. gray linked arms with me, noticing i was nervous. amber has always picked on me, even before her and ethan became a thing.
"welcome! nice to see you julie, paul!" mr. mills exclaimed. mrs. mills walked up from behind him, beaming at her guests for the evening.
"matthew! kimberly!" my father emitted, giving each of them a warm hug. my mother quietly mimicked his actions, smiling nervously.
"oh please paul, call me matt. we worked together for how many years?" mr. mills chuckled.
"come in, please!" mrs. mills invited. by this time me and grayson has reached the steps and followed the rest of our people in. i looked up and saw amber coming down the stairs in a champagne cocktail dress that hugged her body. it put my sun dress to utter shame. she looked at me up and down and smirked, i'm guessing at my outfit. she saw ethan and picked up her pace.
"ethykins!" she trilled and wrapped her arms around his neck. he smiled and grabbed her waist to spin her around. "i didn't know you'd be here!"
"i came for you hun." he said putting her down. she smiled and grabbed his hand, walking him down the grand hall to the kitchen, where the adults were.
"god she's annoying." grayson complained.
"yeah, she is." i murmured. i felt his head turn to me and stare at me. i was looking at my feet.
"what's wrong?"
"what do you mean?" i questioned knowing exactly what he was talking about. he gave me a look and i groaned. "i can't compare." grayson immediately pulled me to a room by the front door, maybe an office?
"to what?" he asked. i shrugged.
"i don't have a lot of money, i don't have a big ass house, no five star chefs at my beck and call, i'm definitely not beautiful. i cant compare to amber, she knows it too." i confessed.
"sydney, you are gorgeous, inside and out. amber may be pretty on the outside but definitely not the inside." he consoled.
"you have to say that." i giggled a little bit, but not cause it was funny.
"it matters the fucking most because i'm your friend. i have to be will you all the time, might as well like your personality. your beauty is just a plus. syd, stop putting yourself down." i opened my to respond but he hugged me, and i knew it was to shut me up. "possessions don't mean anything about who you are and who likes you. it's about your character and personality." i smiled into his chest and hugged him back. after a while of him comforting me he suggested we got back to the dinner party and i agreed. when we walked out of the room we immediately heard laughter. we followed it to find everyone around the kitchen, a glass of wine in hand, talking about something. ethan and amber were nowhere to be found.
"oh there you two are! ethan and amber are outside by the pool." mrs. mills laughed. "could you two go tell them dinner is ready?" we nodded and went to the backyard. as soon as we walked out i could tell they had gardens recently. like today. there were marble statues all over the garden and a stone path to the pool, where ethan and amber sat. they were making out and i could see a couple bottles of alcohol near them. i chuckled lightly out of nowhere and scared them. they looked up at me and grayson.
"the fuck?" amber spat at me. i stopped smiling and felt grayson nudge me, telling me not to eat down on myself. i looked back up and saw ethan talking to amber. "i can do what ever i fucking want." she retorted and pushed him off her and fixed her straps.
"uh, dinners ready." grayson spit out, trying to get away from the situation as fast as possible. ethan nodded and amber ignored him.
"okay, i'll see you inside okay amber?" ethan asked standing up from the chair.
"no, what for me." she whined. he rolled his eyes in our direction and i chuckled, earning a smile from him. amber gave me and annoyed look and i shrugged turning away from her.
the rest of the night was pretty peaceful, everyone got along, as long as i didn't make eye contact with amber. she had been shooting me death glares all night. probably because i was sitting next to ethan and she was sitting across from him. when it was over we got in our cars and went home. i walked through my front door and stopped. i looked around the quant two story home my mom had decorated herself. this house raised four kids and houses a family of six. it had all of my favorite memories in it. i smiled to myself thinking of what grayson has said to me tonight. i wasn't ashamed of the house i lived in. i in fact loved it. ambers may be big and fancy but, mine is better. i get a feeling of safety and love that fills my heart when i'm here. it's probably cause i was raised here, had my birthday parties at, cried in, laughed in, and became who i was in here. i finally didn't care about what i had or how rich i was, i felt rich knowing this was my house.
