The zombie screeched. It was the loudest noise I had ever heard and it sent goosebumps all over my body.
The other zombies in the area turned around and began shuffling towards me.
It took every ounce of courage I had not to scream, although saying that I was also too scared to. I was frozen in place, staring right at the things that were going to eat me, tear me apart limb by limb.
"Craig!" I could hear my friends yelling, "Craig, snap out of it, do something!"
I finally remembered my gun and shot at the weird zombie. I got it right in the chest, but it had no impact whatsoever. I tried again, this time shooting it though the mouth and into its head.
The head exploded, sending flesh and thick blood everywhere. Each wet slap of flesh hitting the walls sent shivers down my spine.
I jumped to my feet and slipped the gun into my pocket, deciding to not waste any more bullets unless absolutely necessary.
I held my bat with my clammy hands and waited for a zombie to get close enough for me to attack. I didn't want to go to them in case they decided to attack me.
They were walking over painfully slowly, groaning with each step, taunting me in a way.
The furthest zombie seemed to decide it couldn't wait any longer and took off running. Tricia cried out, but I already knew what to do.
I held the bat behind my head and swung, hitting the monster as hard as I could. The soft skull smashed upon impact and stuck to my bat. No matter how much I pulled it wouldn't let go.
"Shit!" I cursed, waving it around helplessly to try and drop the corpse, "can I get some help, please?"
My friends all reluctantly left the safety of the stairs to help, aside from Jimmy who was struggling with them.
Clyde ran to me and grabbed the zombie to try and pull my bat out. The nails were stuck, which was the problem.
Tricia jumped straight in, slicing straight through a skull with a quick twirl to give it that little bit extra. Her katana slipped out of the skull effortlessly, mocking our efforts to remove my weapon, which still hadn't come out yet.
"One last pull, I'm sure we're almost out!" Clyde pulled the zombie as hard as he could and I pulled on my bat. The head detached from the neck and Clyde fell over, making Jimmy laugh, "shit!"
"Give me your wand thingy." I told him.
He handed it to me and I sliced through the head until my bat was loose. I gave Clyde his weapon back and ran to join Tricia.
She was backing away from the zombie, staring at it in fear.
This one looked different too. It was the one from the kitchen that hadn't seemed too interested in us until now.
It had green rotting skin, filling the air with an awful stench. The stomach was the largest part of the body and the limbs were shockingly thin, making it look like a balloon with limbs and a head glued on. The neck seemed to have been snapped so the head was rolling around unnaturally, unable to keep still as it wandered around.
"I don't like the look of it. It doesn't look right." Tricia whispered.
"I'm sure it'll be fine." I told her, although I too was worried about it.
I cautiously approached it, holding my bat above my head as i got into the perfect swinging angle.
The head rolled around in my direction and the thing saw me. The eyes didn't seem real, they looked like crappy plastic eyes you'd get in a prank kit or something, but I knew it had seen me.
I swung at it, although I didn't have enough power into it. Despite it being a weak swing, the creature popped with a loud bang.
Green gas began filling the air and I heard Tricia scream.
"Get out, get out!" Clyde yelped, running towards the front door.
I followed them without hesitation. The gas was quickly spreading, meaning we had to leave quickly. Clyde's sweaty hands struggled to open the front door.
"Come on!" I yelled.
"I'm trying! My hands are sweaty okay?" Clyde whimpered, his eyes filling up with tears, "oh fuck, now I'm stress crying!"
He finally got the door open and we all practically dove outside. Jimmy fell over due to his crutch getting caught on the doorframe, but luckily he only scraped his knee.
I scrambled away from the door just in case the gas was still spreading, but it seemed to have reached its limit. We were somewhat safe.
"What do w-we do now?" Jimmy whispered, eyeing the horde wandering down the street, "we aren't s-s-safe here."
They all looked to me expectantly, waiting for me to come up with a solution.
I sighed.
"Okay, we wait for the gas to clear up inside and then we grab as much food as we can and put them into our backpacks. Then, we look for a safe place to stay," I ran a hand through my hair as I thought, "I know where dad keeps his car keys and Clyde knows how to drive, so we can take the car."
"But I don't have my license!" Clyde pointed out.
"Do you think the zombie cops will care about that? It's the apocalypse, dude! We take the law into our own hands."
He wiped the remains of his stress tears away with his sleeve and nodded.
"Okay, I'll drive us wherever we need to go. Hey, my grandma has a place a few miles away from here, we could try going there!"
"Okay. It's decided then, we're going to Clyde's grandma's."
