We watch Kenny walk away from the minibus through the front window, all of us praying for her to return safely, especially since there's a chance Mitch's crew could be lingering around our base.
Once she's out of sight, we return to our lounging around and chatting.
"You should go and talk to Tricia," Tweek tells me, "after what happened in M-Mitch's place I think she needs some comforting from you."
"You sure? After what just happened I-"
"Craig," Tweek interrupts me, "go to her."
I roll my eyes, but get out of my seat and make my way to the front of the bus where Tricia is sat with Karen, talking about school back in the good ol' days.
"Mind if I join you?" I ask.
"I'll leave you two alone." Karen shuffles past Tricia and goes over to Butters.
I sit where she previously sat and stare out of the window, not knowing what to say. Tricia is as far away from me as she can get whilst still being sat in her seat.
"Why did you do it, Craig?" She asks quietly.
"Do what?"
"You killed that guy!" She suddenly yells, "why the fuck would you do that?"
"He was going to kill us!" I point out, "he wanted me to shoot one of our group!"
"So? You didn't have to taser him and then shoot him through the head."
"What other solution was there?"
Tricia gets up from her seat.
"I don't want to talk about this," she mumbles, "I'm going to see Karen."
I get up from my seat too, but I don't follow her. I sit beside Wendyl.
"Hey." He gives me a small wave.
"Hey," I smile, "so you do experiments and shit on zombies, right? Do you know what the signs of someone turning is? I've been meaning to ask for a while."
"I actually do. Not just from experiments, but from seeing it happen," Wendyl pulls a notebook out of Butters' backpack and opens it to a page full of scribbly writing, "the first sign is cravings. You don't exactly know what you're craving, but you want it. It sounds a little strange, but it happens."
"So like how pregnant women get really weird cravings?" I ask, just to make sure I'm thinking about the right kind of thing.
"Yeah!" Wendyl grins, "the second thing is aches. Everything hurts and it's unbearable to the point where you just want to lie in bed and cry. Then your skin starts to itch since it's starting to decay, and the same with your eyes."
"The eyes are the worst part when you see someone turn." I say, remembering Lexus' gross eyes.
"I know. I saw a friend of mine turn and it was so strange seeing her eyes turn from a gorgeous green to just completely white. She went blind in the end and my slightly experimental cure solved everything but that," Wendyl sighs and leans back in his seat, then goes quiet for a moment, "after that you get really bad stomach pains. That's the first sign of your body shutting down when you're turning. After that, you're pretty much gone."
"Damn. That sounds awful to go through."
I think back to when I saw that girl in the old people's home. How was she not screaming in pain as she was going through all of that?
It sounds much worse than the torture I went through at Mitch's place.
"How long does it take?" I ask.
"Not long. It takes around five bites for the blood plague to start working and then it's only a matter of hours before you turn," Wendyl reads through a few of his notes, "the shortest one I recorded was six hours and the longest was seventeen."
"Jesus." I mutter.
Wendyl puts the notebook back and leans back in his seat. I get the feeling the conversation is over, so I get up and sit back with Tweek.
"Hey," he greets me, "are we going to t-talk about what happened before?"
"Do you want to?" I ask.
Tweek nods.
"But I don't think a m-minibus in the middle of nowhere is the right place." he gestures to the bus.
"Understandable," I nod, although deep down I do want to talk about it now and find out what is going on between us. I mean, do we both like each other or was that just a weird spur of the moment thing? "Hey, can I ask you something? What's the deal with Wendyl, Stan and Kyle? Are they dating or what?"
I look over to Stan and Kyle who are flirting, fingers intertwined between them. Stan whispered something in Kyle's ear and the ginger's cheeks suddenly reddened.
"Oh, those guys? They're all together." Tweek replies.
"All three of them?"
"Yeah. Like a p-poly relationship. It's why they're all so defensive over each other."
Lucky bastards. They've got two boyfriends and I can't even get one. But...
I look over at Tweek and notice that he's also looking at me. He looks away quickly, pretending he was never looking at all.
All of a sudden, there's a loud banging at the door. Sparky starts barking loudly, hackles raised. Everybody jumps to their feet in a panic (excluding Tweek) and grabs their weapons.
I push past them all and go to the door, then I laugh.
"It's only Kenny," I announce as I open the door. Kenny drops a can of gas onto the nearest seat, panting slightly, "Hey, you okay?"
"Had to.... run part of the way," she pants, "big horde. It's moving away from us but I almost got caught in the middle of it."
She wipes her forehead with the back of her hand and I grab her wrist.
"Ouch! What are you doing?" She demands, trying to pull her arm out of my grasp.
On her wrist is a bite. A red steaming bite that's beginning to turn purple.
