"Dave, did you hear me?" Mom screamed over the phone.
I hid behind the door.
"Our daughter is dying. Will you not see her?" Mom paused and I saw her grip becomes so tight that her whole hand was white. "Fine, Dave, fine." Now her voice was deadly and calm. "You know what, this is why you left the house. You never knew the meaning of love and commitment did you?" With that, my mom slammed the phone down on its stand.
I didn't have to see her face to know she was crying. Her shoulder shook as she silently let the tears stream out.
I silently slipped away to my room.
